DAILY NATIONAL -N
SUMMARY '
PCP and LDP are abbreviations that
many farmers and the grain industry are
getting familiar with and learning how to
use. Producers never dreamed of this being
a marketing tool when loan rates were
established under the Freedom to Farm
Bill. Two or three years of good crops, big
carryovers and reduced export sales has
dropped cash bids down near, and below
for wheat, the government loan rates. New
contract lows have been established each
new trading day. Wheat 1 to 5 cents lower.
Com 1 to 4 cents lower. Sorghum 1 to 2
cents lower. Soybeans 2 to 9 cents lower.
Posted County Prices are the rates each
county has established as its loan rate; the
price the government will give you a loan
on your commodity that you may later
either buy back and retain ownership or
just forfeit the product depending on which
way the price trends develop. If the current
cash price of your commodity is below the
PCP you may apply for a LDP, Loan Defi
cit Payment. Majority of the counties now
have LDP for wheat ranging from 0 to 60
cents, mostly 20-30 cents per bushel. Loan
rates for many counties have com pegged
around 1.85 and soybeans 5.40. However,
new crop bids by some terminal elevators
have com and 2.15 and soybeans at 5.50.
Grain and soybean cash trade slow as own
ers reluctant to sell at current low bids. Ele
vators, dealers, processors and exporters
reluctant to buy ahead due to large carryov
er supplies, reduced export sales and good
prospects of a bumper crop that could
result in further price declines. Storage
space will be a teal problem this fall. Also,
rail and other transportation infrastructure
insufficient to handle burdensome sup
plies. Grains piled on the streets subject to
the elements deteriorate rapidly and do not
lend to higher prices. The Government
could become a large mortgage holder.
