Blueberries: Look for dark blue
fruits with a silvery cast Berries
should be plump, firm, the same
size, dry and free of stems and
leaves.

At home refrigerate in a shal
low container. Wash just before
serving.
Cantaloupes: Look for a thick
coarse, corky netting covering the

came to the Yoik County 4-H cen
ter on July 1 to participate in the
York County livestock judging
contest
Members judged two classes oi
beef, sheep, and swine. The live
stock was provided by York
County producers for the contest
The contest is an all-day event
with teams competing from York.
Lancaster, Lebanon, Berks, and
Dauphin counties.

on the grounds. Harvey gathers the
eggs and distributes them to senior
citizens.
Every Sunday Harvey and his
wife spend a few hours visiting
heart patients at Christiana Hospi
tal. Harvey had open-heart surgery
more than a year ago and is a mem
ber of the Zipper’s Club (Mended
Hearts Club). Club members visit

The Harveys have three child
ren. Son E. Thomas took over the
family business IS years ago. One
daughter is a stockbroker and
another teaches Spanish and Latin
at the Delaware high school.

thing and don’t share it, you don’t

fairly firm or a little soft The skin

yellow or at least a little creamy.

ripen.

Strawberries: Look for berries
with a full red color and bright lus
ter, firm flesh and the cap stem
still attached. Medium to small
strawberries usually taste better
than larger ones.
Avoid fruit with large uncol
ored or seedy areas, a shrunken
look or softness or mold which
can spread rapidly from one berry
to another.
At home refrigerate, and keep
berries dry. Wash just before serv
ing.
Watermelons: Look for firm
juicy flesh with good red color and
dark brown or black seeds (whit
ish seeds mean the melon is imma
ture). With uncut melon look for a
smooth, slightly dull surface. The
ends should be filled out and
rounded and the belly (the under
side that rests on the ground)
should have a creamy color.
Avoid pale-covered flesh, white
streaks, whitish seeds, dry mealy
flesh or watery stringy flesh.
