INTERCOURSE (Lancaster
Co.) “Here,” said Radell Peters
as he handed the ribbon to his
coach, . Jeff Craig, Little Britain.
“Hang this on your office bulletin
board. You did the work to help
us.”
Moments before, Radell, along
with team members Ryan
Donough, Jimmy Zimmerman,
and Derick Bollinger, captured
first place team at the Southeast
4-H Pennsylvania Meats Judging
Contest at Stoltzfus Meats,
Intercourse.
Craig, a processing technician at
Stoltzfus Meats, has been coach
ing the county teams since 1990.
Lancaster County itself captured
state championship in meats judg
ing during 4-H Achievement Days
at Penn State in 1985, when Craig
was a member.
Craig noted that the ribbon will
be on display, eventually, in the
Farm and Home Center.
This was the first time that Stolt
zfus Meats hosted the contest held
in previous years at Godfrey
Brothers in York.
Since April, the team has met 10
times for a total of 30 hours of
practice time at the meat process
ing plant
If Lancaster County wins the
state competition in early August
at University Park, they go onto
the national competition held in
conjunction with the American

Holstein Field Night
FREDERICKSBURG (Leba
non Co.) The Lebanon County
Holstein Association has
announced that its annual field
night is to be held 7 p.m., August 7,
at JIMANDOT Holsteins, owned
by James and Dot Bennetch of
Millbach Springs.
The Bennetch family farm is
located along Rt. 419, between
Schaefferstown and Womelsdorf.
James and Dot have two teenage
children, Jessica and Christopher,
who own and show Holsteins. The
family also enjoys bicycle riding.
The mouth of the farm lane is
located between two residential
properties on the north side of the
roadway, and can be difficult to
spot by motorists and first-time
guests.
Signs arc to be eirected to direct
attention to the lane.
The Bennetches milk 67 regis
tered Holsteins that have a June
rolling herd average of 28,886
pounds of milk, 953 pounds of fat
and 905 pounds of protein without
the use of bovine somatotropin

Radell, who also won champion
overall individual, was only 20
points away from scoring a perfect
300. The next place individual
scored a 179.
According to Hughes, the
4-H’ers are judged individually on
meat retail cuts. They are also
scored on their ability to judge car
casses and wholesale and retail
classes. They must also give oral
reasons.
Helping with the carcass quality
contest was Bill Henning, Penn
State extension meats specialist
He noted that the 4-H members
“have to understand what beef
quality ratings are and what is
acceptable to the industry.”
Many of the 4-H’ers can learn
more about meats quality, iden
tifying exterior and interior fat
and yield grading by participating
in practice contests.
There were 13 4-H participants
