GAY BROWNLEE
Somerset Co. Correspondent
MEYERSDALE (Somerset
Co.) Four cow breeds were
shown at the Somerset County
Junior Dairy Show at the county
fairgrounds on July 14. They were
Holstein, Guernsey, Jersey and
Brown Swiss.
Joshua Van Tassel’s five-year
old Jersey was named the supreme
champion by judge John Burkett,
a Pennsylvania State University
alumnus from East Freedom, Blair
County.
“The Jersey’s balance and out
standing dairyness and superb ud
der make her the best animal over
all,” commented Burkett, who ob
served that many factors enter into
judging the dairy characteristics
for a supreme champion.
Tasha’s Dunker Tara, taking
the same title in 1997 for the
16-year-old Friedens teen-ager, is
a daughter of the sire Greenridge
Altheas Dunker, and dam Maran
alha’s Brass Jet Tasha.
In the Jersey breed she also was
the best animal bred and owned
for Van Tassel. She was senior
champion and Jersey breed grand
champion.
“She was supreme here last
year and got grand champion at
Martinsburg and second in her
class at state,” said Van Tassel
about Tara’s 1997 performance,
“but I didn’t think she would win
again this year. I was surprised.
Reserve champion was Tara
Berretta Tonya. Van Tassel’s
junior three-year-old Jersey.
Mossys Choice Julia, Matthew
Mosholder’s four-year-old Hol
stein daughter of The Choice of
Mark Adam-ET and RGB Blacks
tar Jo-EL, was the Holstein breed
grand champion and senior cham
pion. The breeder was William
Mosholder.
“She has the best udder in the
show today,” reported Burkett
about the bovine beauty.
Matt Mosholder, 16, is from
Rockwood.
The Holstein reserve champion
was another four-year-old named
Gor-Wood-D Flip Calypso, own
ed by Julie Miller of Boswell.
Justin Kaufman’s winter calf —
Just In Henry Elma was grand
champion in Guernsey breed. Re
serve champion was Someday-
Acres Elsies-Ellie, a spring year
ling owned by Eric Murray of
Salisbury.
Kaufman is from Friedens.
The Brown Swiss grand cham
pion also was a four-year-old
owned by Lance Bittner of Berlin.
Four D Trishs Sandy is the daugh
ter of Top Acres Combo Preston-
EXand Four D 811 Trish. Robert
Poor was the breeder.
Four D Heidi Erica, a six-year
old owned by Adam Coleman,
Berlin, was the reserve champion
brown Swiss cow.
Some 80 exhibitors showed 144
animals in the show and 40 exhibi
tors qualified to advance to a dis
trict show.
Most probably will opt for the
Southwest District Dairy Show
held in Martinsburg, Blair County
in early August.
“I suspect,” Burkett said after
the show, "that some of the win
ners here will be in the winners

is over.”
The show went on under the
discomfort of hot weather and
high humidity, relieved occasion
ally when a wafting breeze flut
tered through the show arena.
Bemida Gable from New Enter
prise, Bedford County judged
showmanship. Larry Lohr was the
ringmaster.
