The Penn State Dairy Cattle Research and Education Center Is one
of the new Dairy of Distinction farms. Located at University Park, the
facility has primary functions of research and education. Because of
their size and public use, the buildings were constructed without the
use of wood. Strict building codes required a sizeable sprinkler sys
tem for fire control. The Penn State dairy herd numbers 360 head
with about 180 milking cows.

The facility was designed with wide feed alleys to accommodate
modern feeding equipment. The milking parlor consists of a
double-10 herringbone stall arrangement with rapid-exit gates.
The manager Is Mark Amsler, and the assistant manager Is Robert
Hoffman.
