ANSWER A reader wanted to know how to relocate
gladiolus bulbs that have already sprouted about 6 inches
tall. Thanks to Margaret Strause, Leesport, and a Manhelm
reader who sent basically the same information. Do not dry
off growing gladiolus. The do not grow from bulbs that get
bigger every year, but from corms, which renew every
year. At this time of the year, the plants are too young to
have formed the new corms for next year’s growth. Replant
by having the new bed ready for them, including holes to
plant them in. If the soil is very dry, fill the holes with water
and allow it to drain away into the surrounding soil and then
dig up the glads by keeping as much soil on the roots as
possible to plant in a new bed.
