    cerned Amish families and cir
culated among the bishops and
church districts. Was quite
touching to hear old grey-haired
bishops read the letter in Eng
lish after the regular church
service. Sadly, not all bishops
read the paper but distributed
the papers to their church folk.
Without a doubt, every Amish
family got one.
All proper Amish parents are
close to their children, keep
close tabs on their whereabouts
and expect them to join the
faith. Since we practice believ
er’s baptism and each must be
persuaded in his own mind, girls
join at age 16-18, boys age 20-22.
And during this time some have
more liberties than others, or
more correct take more liber
ties, against their parents’
wishes.
Isn’t that the way teenage life
is in most of outside America?

more, and some kids have more
liberties, faster cars and can
stay out late. So it is among us
Amish; we’re just human, our
church is not perfect. We sin
cerely regret all this adverse
publicity; and hope it can be for
given. Pray for us, all you God
fearing folks. Pray for us that
we can maintain our way of life.
We love America; it buys our
products, its laws let us live our
lifestyle and religion. America
provides roads, hospitals, law
makers. We’ve lived in its lands
for 280 years. Why this sinful
happening in our ’society we
wish we knew, but then isn’t all
society changing? After all this
fuss about the Lambert murder
case the past 4 years and still
not settled, now this Amish drug
dealing story’s in the papers.
And there’s that hee-hawing
among the Washington donkeys
right now. Goodness, hope it’s
soon resolved properly. Let’s

hope it’s possible to get this
country back on track. Let’s get
back to some honest Abe Lincoln
politics again.
The question often comes:
What is Amish? A church of car
ing and sharing, designed to
maintain the old Christian stan
dards, believer’s baptism, holy
communion, shunning, no out
side marriages, and a firm be
lief in life hereafter. We pay
taxes, some vote, rest of us may
be armchair Republicans.
There’s about 119 church dis
tricts in our Lancaster set
tlement, most of us spend 30
percent of our time in helping
each other.
Just to illustrate, suppose the
Philly Inquirer press would suf
fer a disastrous fire some night.
Next morn, the New York
Times, Baltimore Sun, Wash
ington Post, and let’s hope our
Lancaster Newspapers would
dispatch men to get the debris
cleaned up, and food. At the
same time an effort would be
made to print the Inquirer else
where and continue circulation.
The Times and the Sun and the
Post reporters would gather
pictures and stories to keep the
Philly news flowing. That’s in
effect how our Amish system
works.

media for portraying this hap

men again many writers and
camera bugs roam the country
side poking their zoom lens into
our lifestyle hoping for another
best seller Amish book.
And the tourists (over 4 mil

than summer flies, and in some
ways a blessing as about 30 per
cnt of us depend on the tourist
trade for a living. Quilt and craft
shops, bake shops, market busi

ists. We don’t like the publicity
but tolerate it.
„ And of course at times the
news media exploits the word
“Amish”. It’s always Amish
buggy hit on route 340, Amish
man’s barn burns, Amish man
injured in accident. You never
see Catholic youth caught
speeding, Presbyterian man’s
barn burns, Methodist woman
hit on route 30. Maybe we could
ask for some consideration on
this part.

Thanks to the FBI for quietly
making the arrests and not dis
turbing our busy folks cutting
hay.
Thanks for working with the 3
boys to encourage them to help
the system and perhaps some
good will come out of this. Hope
fully our boys will now know this
is a federal crime and can have
serious consequences. And we
forgive those ot the world who
transgress against us. In that
spirit we ask to be forgiven for
this happening
By now we see this was a na
tional news item. In fact, a
worldwide news item. A sad
happening in our Amish church.
Again we ask all believers to
pray for us. We are likewise
minded.
