The hard rain on July 8 fol lowed by overcast weather on July 9 and heavy dews the remainder of the week provided weather condi tions in Lancaster County that fa vored tobacco blue mold. During that period an abundance of spores were produced that infected many fields that previously did not have blue mold. This week many fields have very active blue mold. Blue mold is easy to see, just look tor yellow spots on the top of the leaf, underneath you will find a blue gray mold growing if the infection is still viable. In order for blue mold to sur vive it needs weather conditions which keep the leaves wet for pro longed periods and cloudy weath er. Lancaster County’s weather has been very favorable the past several weeks. As the number of reports increase, die number of potential sources of new infection also expands.
