Sheep, Wool Growers Hold 50th Keystone Show, Sale (Continued from Pago At) The date of the 1999 Keystone is to be announced, though it can be expected to be held about the same time as this year’s show and sale. It is to be held again at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. There were 12 breeds exhibited and sold during the 50th Keystone Hampshire, Suffolk, Southdown, Finnsheep, Polypay, Oxford, Shropshire, Tunis, Che viot, Horned Dorset, Polled Dorset, and Wether Sheep. Exhibitors and buyers came from Canada and a number of states, including Maiyland, Illi nois, Ohio, West Virginia, Ver mont, Virginia, and Michigan. The Keystone show is designed so that a champion ewe and ram are selected from each breed and then a supreme champion ewe and ram are selected from those. The supreme champion ram of the show was an all-black crossbred spring ram lamb Wether sire exhibited by Lyn Lee Farms, owned by Dr. Gerald and Sue Clair of State College. According to Steve Taylor, manager of Lyn Lee, the farming operation includes 900 acres of cropland, with about 350 Suffolk and crossbred Wether sheep, 100 Saler beef cattle brood cows, and they have about 50 sows to pro duce crossbred market swine for club pigs. Taylor said he has been coming to the Keystone for about seven years, three as manager of Lyn Lee. The supreme ram champion ship is the second supreme title won by an enliy from Lyn Lee, Taylor said. In 1996 they showed the supreme champion ewe, a Suffolk. The supreme champion ram was purchased for $575 by Donald Bullock of Harrington, Delaware. The supreme champion ewe of the show was a Suffolk yearling ewe exhibited by ECM SufTolks, owned by Eddie and Lisa Miller of Waynesboro, Virginia. The Millets farm about 350 acres raising hay, wheat, com, and the rest in pasture. They keep about 135 brood Suffolk ewes, and raise about 50 steers on grass for feedlots. Eddie said he has been showing and selling at the Keystone from 1986 to 1994, and returned this year after a three-year hiatus. In past years, they showed at least a half dozen sheep. John Tracey of Elizabethtown purchased the supreme champion ewe for $4OO. Suffolk In the Suffolk breed competi tion, the reserve champion ewe was the top-selling Suffolk. A late spring ewe lamb, it was exhibited by Hilltop Haven Farm of Wood bine, Maryland, and sold for $575 to Lyn Lee Farm. The champion Suffolk ram was a late spring lamb consigned by Ln Lee Farm and was purchased for $4OO by Steve Walmer of Reinholds. The reserve champion Suffolk ram was a yearling exhibited by ECM Suffolks that sold for $ 175 to Jeff Hunter of Cambridge Springs, Pa. Tunis In the Tunis breed, the champ ion and reserve champion ewes were both exhibited by Royal and Susan Unzicker. The champion ewe was a yearling that sold for $ 175 to Gary Wolcott of Brooklyn, Michigan. The reserve champion ewe was an ear ly spring lamb that sold for $ 175 to Karen Carter of Dillsburg. Shropshire In the Shropshire breed, the champion ram was a yearling exhi bited by Lane’s End Farm in Jersey Shore. It was purchased for $lOO by Carlin Catchcart of Dry Run. The champion Shropshire ewe was an early spring lamb exhibited by Wcy Farms of Womelsdorf, that wasn’t offered for sale. Polypay In the Polypay breed, Lane’s End showed the three champions two ewes and a ram. The champion ram was a year ling that was purchased by Phillip Kidney of Gainesville, Pa. Tames Swigart of McVeytown, Pa., purchased both ewe champ ions, both yearling animals. Oxford In the Oxford breed, Everett Oxfords of Upper Black Eddy, Pa., exhibited the champion and reserve ewes, both purchased by David Harpster. Hampshire In the Hampshire breed, the champion ram was a late spring lamb exhibited by Wilson Hamp shires of Rural Retreat, Virginia. It was purchased for $325 by Wil liam Stoner of Mifflintown, Pa. The reserve champion Hamp shire ram was an early spring lamb exhibited by John and Judy Moore, of Eagle, Michigan. It was pur chased by Gary Wolcott . The champion Hampshire ewe was a late spring lamb exhibited by the Moores, and it was purchased for $3OO by Jamie Fought of Carlisle. The reserve champion Hamp shire ewe also was shown by Wil son Hampshires. The fall lamb was purchased for $325 by Peter Heath of Columbia,' Pa. The highest selling Hampshire was a yearling ewe exhibited by Wilson Hampshires that sold for $375 to Wolcott Cheviot In the Cheviot breed, the champion ram was an early spring lamb exhibited by John and Jud|y Moore, and that sold for $4OO to Jack Snyder of Parker, Pa. The reserve champion Cheviot ram was a late spring lamb exhi bited by Triple J Acres of Windsor, Pa., that sold for $175 to John and Judy Moore. The champion ewe was a late spring lamb exhibited by the Wilerton family of Danvers Illi nois, that was purchased for $450 by Jack Snyder of Parker, Pa. It was the highest selling Cheviot. The reserve champion Cheviot ewe was a yearling exhibited by Erdenheim Farm of Lafayette, Pa., that sold for $425 to Betty Koehler of Allentown. The highest-selling Cheviot was a late spring ram lamb consigned by Erdenheim Farms that sold for $550 to Circle K Farms in Bedford. Southdown In the Southdown breed, the champion ram was a yearling exhi bited by Bruce Snyder of Kutz town, that was purchased for $125 by Joy Shreck of Bunker Hill, West Virginia. The reserve champion South down ram was a late spring lamb exhibited by Jennifer Flinchbaugh of York. It was not sold. The champion ewe was a late spring lamb exhibited by Flin chbaugh that sold for $2OO to C.W. Bass of Stony Creek, Virginia. The reserve champion South- down ewe was exhibited by Scenic View Farm of Clarksburg, Virgini a. It was purchased for $2OO by Larry Welsh of Sarnia, Canada. The top-selling Southdown was exhibited by Matt Trostle and sold for $325 to SR Farm in Arlington, Virginia. Dorset In the Polled Dorset breed, the champion ram was an early fall lamb exhibited by Wagner Dorsets of Easton, Pa., that sold for $525 to Sunrise Dorset Farm in Harrisburg. The reserve champion Polled Doreset ram was a late fall lamb exhibited by Treaty Line Farm of Prospect, Ohio, that sold for $450 to Sunrise Dorset Farm. The champion ewe was an early fall lamb exhibited by Penn State University that sold for $525 to Sunrise Dorset Farm. Horned Dorset In the Homed Dorset show, the champion ram was an early fall lamb exhibited by Cassell Homed Dorsets of Wytheville, Virginia. Cassell also exhibited the champion ewe, an early fall lamb, and the reserve champion ewe, a yearling. Wether Sheep A new addition to the Keystone this year was Wether Sheep, most ly exhibited by Lyn Lee Farm. The champion ram, of course, was the supreme champion, while the reserve champion sire was a Suffolk spring lamb. The champion ewe was a Suf folk yearling, while the reserve ewe was a crossbred yearling. The champion ewe was pur chased for $350 tty Mac Magee of Shippcnsburg, Pa. In addition to the supreme and breed championships, the Pa. Sheep and Wool Growers present a special award in recognition of the quality of animal offered by an exhibitor for sale.
