Farms in Europe are small
compared to the U.S. In fact, in
Germany they average just fifty
acres. This makes it almost
impossible for farmers to own
large, efficient machinery to
harvest crops, thus leading to a
dependence on custom harvesters.
Claas KGaA, headquartered in
Harsewinkel, Germany, has taken
advantage of the need of custom
harvesters in Western Europe, and
the company now holds 61 percent
of the self-propelled forage
harvester market. They are the
largest manufacturer of harvesting
equipment in Western Europe.
Class of America currently has
about 180 dealers in the U.S., and
they project the number will grow
to 300 in the next five years. Claas
sells harvesters, balers, disc
mowers and rotary rakes in the
U.'S.

The Claas Jaguar Forage
Harvester has been sold in North
America since 1993. It has a large
variety of features. There is a high
tech control panel where the main
switches and controls are located,
as well as the multifunctional
control lever. The many automatic
functions are controlled from the
cab.

offers a row independent
corn head with a cutting
width of 15 feet. Double
transport discs pick up
the plant and feed them
into the header. All corn
heads can be equipped
with an auto-pilot to
steer through the rows
automatically. It can also
be equipped with a
sensor controlled contour
plus height control,
enabling the header to
hover over the ground
with no ground pressure.
A basic requirement for
quality chopping is that
the crop is compressed
before reaching the
chopping cylinder. This is
done by the intake and
pre-compression rollers.
The compression rollers
crush and compress as
they move the crop to the chopping
cylinder. A metal detector, located
in the front lower intake roller,
recognizes ferrous metals. The
feed rollers are stopped
immediately if metal is detected
and the intake stops in less than
3.0 seconds.
There are many other features
such as the push button automatic
blade sharpening which allows the
operator to sharpen the blades in
the field. “Claas’ Automatic
Greasing and Knife Sharpening
lets me start cutting 20 to 30
minutes before other machines are
in the field. That adds up to a lot
of additional tonnage when you get
that much extra cutting in every
day," said Logan. “With the
automatic sharpener you can
touch up the knives while waiting
for a truck. You do it from the cab
with the touch of a button.” The

Of special interest to feedlots is
the corn cracker, (or mill) located
behind the chopper in the crop
flow stream, which cracks all the
corn and mashes tough stem parts.

roller jackets, which eliminates
the need to replace the whole
roller, cutting replacement costs by
about 50 percent. All of the kernels
are opened up and a friction action
created by the roll differential is
applied to the whole crop mass
The corn crackers can be removed
and stored in the machine for
quick changes of crops.
Logan toured the factory before
purchasing his first piece of Claas
Equipment. ”1 wasn’t sure about
buying one before visiting the
factory, but I’ve seen the quality
they build into their equipment
What I saw made a big difference
in my decision.”
When it comes to service, Claas
has a history of reliability. “The
service organization has taken
good care of me. They have
followed me all over the country,”
Logan said. ’’l’ve run about a
100,000 tons through two different
Claas machines. I think their
machines are exceptional.”
