a backyard. The National
Wildlife Federation recommends
attracting butterflies using
plants that serve the needs of all
their life stages. Butterflies
need a place to lay eggs, food
plants for the larvae (caterpil
lar), a place to form a chrysalis,
and nectar sources for the adult.
For example, to attract Zebra
swallowtails, plant several paw
paw tress.
Most adult butterflies live 20-
40 days. Some, however, are
believed to live no longer than
three to four days, while others
such as overwintering mon
archs, may live six months.

orange, pmk or purple blossoms.
They prefer flat topped or clus
tered blossoms with short flower
tubes. This allows the butter
flies to reach the nectar with
their probiscis. Nectar produc
ing plants should be grown in
open, sunny areas. Adults rarely
feed on plants in the shade.
Some caterpillars are picky
eaters, and rely on only one or
two species of plants. The cater
pillar of the giant swallowtail
butterfly feed on just one native
plant food—the northern
ash. Others, such as the red-'
spotted purple will feed on a
variety of deciduous trees.
Here is a list of the plants
that can attract butterflies:
Lilac, Red Clover, Phlox, Yarrow,
Honesty, Aubretia, Zinnia,
Cosmos, Butterfly bush, Joe-Pye
weed, Tickseed Sunflowers,
Goldenrods, Asters, Butterfly
weed, Liatris, Thistles,
Ceanothus species, Dogbanes
and Meadowsweet.
Butterfly Facts:
• Over 700 species of butter
flies are found in North America
but very few are agricultural
pests.
•Adult butterflies range in
size from the half-inch pigihy
blue found in Southern
California, to the giant female
