timed A.I. increased pregnancy
rates significantly, to almost nor
mal rates, even during hot summer
months. In addition, cows supple
mented with carotene for more
than 90 days had higher preg
nancy rates and much-increased
daily milk production.
It was concluded that timed A.I.
can reduce the deleterious effects
of heat stress on reproductive
function of dairy cows. Also, sup
plementation with beta-carotene

not only helped improve fertility
in heat-stressed dairy cattle but
caused a substantial increase in
milk yield as well, apparently by
the antioxidant promoting lacta
tion.
It would seem that the old say
ing about horses and cows still
holds true, which should result in
more net income for the embattled
dairy farmer.
