    GRAIN PROCESSING
FOR CATTLE FEEDERS
A very important decision for
cattle feeders is the choice of
method for the processing or pre
paration of grains common to
feedlot rations. Many cattlemen
are under the impression that
grinding, rolling, cooking, etc., all
improve the digestibility and feed
ing value of grains. This is not al
ways true, because the differences
in size of kernel, seedcoat, fiber
content, and palatability of each
grain must be considered.
Com is produced in greater
quantity than any other grain and
is also preferred by most feeders.
Compared with other grains, com
is superior in available energy,
higher in total digestible nutrients,
is a source of vitamin A, is more
palatable, and requires less pro
cessing. A commonly held opin
ion among cattlemen is that the re
duction of particle size by grind
ing and rolling improves the
digestibility of shelled whole
com.
However, in finishing ration
containing at least 80 percent
com, feeding trials have shown no
difference as to whether the corn
was cracked, finely ground,
rolled, or whole.
When whole com is fed a few
grains of com can be easily seen in
manure because of the relatively
large size. However, close ex
amination of droppings from cat

tie fed finely ground com reveals
the same amount of undigested
grain. In fact, when no roughage is
fed, whole com provides superior
performance over ground or rolled
since whole com provides its own
“roughage factor” thereby avoid
ing the mmenids and liver ab
scesses associated with high con
centrate diets.
Steam rolling or flaking does
improve the utilization of own by
S percent to 10 percent in most
finishing diets. However, the capi
tal investment, energy cost, equip
ment maintenance and labor asso
ciated with steam flaking dictate
its use in larger operations where
the equipment can be used to ca
pacity.
Barley has a high fiber hull and
contains less available energy than
com, but is an excellent feed for
cattle. Both grinding and rolling
improve the digestibility of bar
ley, while steam flaking further
improves utilization.
Oats have a fibrous hull like
barley, but the hull is a bit softer
and cattle utilize whole oats better
than whole barley. Either grinding
or rolling can improve digesti
bility. Although a very palatable
and excellent feed for cattle, good
quality oats are almost always too
expensive to compete with com.
Regardless of the grain in ques
tion, the choice of a processing
method must be based on total
cost of capital, depreciation, ener
