year, all the necessary factors came
together, and we will do our best to
manage those resorces well.**
To keep agriculture strong in
Pennsylvania, Hayes said we need
to preserve our natural resource
base of farmland and water. Cur
rently, Pennsylvania as a matter of
public policy, is preserving more
farmland than any other state. State
farmland preservation recently
reached a milestone of 100,000
acres in the preservation programs.
Hayes said the recent research
symposium was conducted to see
what can be done for current prob
lems facing agriculture. He said
that research programs need to be
relative to the issues being faced by
the men and women in agriculture.
And there needs to be a degree of
transferability from the research
site to the user site. There must be a
chance for profit from the research,
and it must have a cost effective

Agricultural odors may be the
most pressing of research topics. “I
am quite sure a good bit of our
problem could be avoided if there
were a way to suppress agricultural
odors,” Hayes said. “This is prob
ably the first thing that brings peo
ple together against our agriculture
operations. After they get together,
they talk about a lot of other things,
but odors drive them together.
“We need to find ways to bring
harmony with ourselves and those
who live around us. It’s a very
ambitious undertaking, but if we
want to maintain agriculture in a
very robust way and be sure agri
culture stays here in Pennsylvania,
we need to address these societal
problems.”
