Collectibles Show
HARRISBURG A new idea involving
old dairy items will help celebrate the 35th an
niversary of the Pennsylvania All-American
Dairy Show September 20-24,1998 in Harris
burg, Pa.
Dairy antiques and collectibles from a by
gone dairy farm era will be exhibited to show
how cows are milked, milk handled, cream
separated, butter churned and cheese and ice
cream made on farms in the late 1800 s and
early 1900 s.
Collectors from Maryland, New York,
North Carolina and Pennsylvania have al
ready committed to display their valuable col
lections. Other exhibitors are expected from
Michigan, Kentucky and other states.
The exhibit will open at noon on Sunday,
September 20. Some exhibits will remain
through the end of the Dairy Cattle Show on
Thursday, September 24. The display of an
tiques promises to be both entertaining and
educational for all visitors.
Items displayed will include seldom-seen
equipment used in the late 1880 s and early
1900 s when U.S. milk production was shift
ing from a few family cows to the commercial
off-farm sale of cream and milk. These in
clude gravity and mechanical cream separa
tors, butter chums, butter workers, butter pad
dles, bowls, molds, and prints, cheese making
utensils, ice cream freezers, dippers, scoops,
and molds, milk and cream cans, milk bottles.
Babcock milk testing equipment, cow bells of
all sizes and shapes and early dairy advertis
ing and signs.
One of the most rare items will be a foot
powered milking machine loaned for the ex
hibit by the Penn State Pasto Agricultural Mu
seum. A very unique exhibit will be “Mar
tha’s Milk House,” a self-contained trailer
unit demonstrating an early 1900 s era milk
house and equipment James and Martha Rob-,
.etts, Scio, N.Y. take their “milk house” to a
variety of shows and fairs.
Coordinator of the exhibit is Dr. Darwin
Braund, a former Bradford County. Pa. dairy
farm boy, now Professor of Animal Science at
North Carolina State University. Persons in
