remainder of the quilt is like new. It is printed to be
embroidered in cross stitch and is already marked to
be quilted. If she wases it, the markeings and cross
stitch will probably wash out. Is it worth the time sew
ing and maybe not getting clean? The dirty part is

ANSWER A Pennsylvania reader has had a
Christmas cactus plant for three years and it has nev
er bloomed, she wanted to know how to get it to
bloom. Thanks to Pat Elligson, Millers, Md., who
gives the following instructions:
• Have plant in a clay pot with good potting soil.
• Place potted plant outside for the summer in a
spot protected from hot sun and wind, but good light.
Water as usual.
• Before frost in October, bring plant indoors and
place in a cool room where it will get no light at night. It
should have only natural daylight. An unused bed
room is good. If you must place it in a lamp-lighted
room, cover plant with a paper grocery bag. (No
unnatural light is a key to blooms). Do NOT water for
several weeks. Dirt will go dry and leaves will go limp.
(The plant is resting).
• Around the first of November, place plant in a
bright sunny south window and begin watering again
as needed.
• You should see tiny buds forming at the ends of
the leaves. If buds drop, lessen the water and move.
It may not bloom exactly at Christmas, but hopefully
close to that date.
Thanks also to Laurie Donaldson for writing that
she has a Christmas cactus that has been in her fami
ly for more than 50 years. They do not like artificial
light because they depend on the shorter days to
know when to bloom. Her cactus is in a room with
eastern and norther exposure that barely gets above
70 degrees. The plant prefers temperatures between
50-70 degrees. It blooms great every year and is
almost 3-feet wide and is covered with blooms at
Christmas.

start or root forsythia from a clipping. Thanks to Laur
ie Donaldson for writing that the best time to take cut
tings is in early spring. Cut about an 18-inch sprig. Put
bottom six-inches in water. Place in sunny location.
Roots will soon sprout. Keep newly planted sprigs
very wet until well established.
