Helping his dad fix tractors, cars, and machinery on the farm plowed the way for a career opportunity for Joshua Kurtz, Fleetwood. It was on the family’s dairy farm that Kurtz learned the basics of diagnosing engine problems and motor repair. Offer Scholarships EDGEWATER, Md. - The Maryland Gram Producers Utilization Board has allocated $5,000 of gram check-off funds to support a scholarship pro gram The program will be adminis tered by the Maryland Gram Producers Association, which will be awarding two deserving students with scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each ($1,250 for each semester) The students must be enrolled m a Maryland or an out-of-state institution The purpose of the scholar ship is to provide financial sup port to students interested in pursuing an agriculturally relat ed career. His success in regional competi tion qualified him to attend the Pennyslvania VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) State mental protection, crop and live stock production, Maryland’s gram farmers believe it is very important to encourage students to consider careers m agricul ture by enhancing their educa tional development through the use of scholarships. “Agriculture is undoubtedly not the same as it was with all of the technology available today,” said Breck Debnam, president of the Maryland Gram Producers Utilization Board. “The agricultural community needs a strong educational foun dation if we are going to be suc cessful m the future, he said. In motorcycle technology com petition, Kurtz worked against the clock diagnosing and repairing problems in various parts of a motorcycle. He remained calm and proved he was well prepared for the com petition by finishing first among state wide contestants. In the fall, Kurtz will take advantage of the full scholarship he won to attend the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute for 11 months in Phoenix, Ariz. But before he takes off for more training, Kurtz will compete in national competition in Kansas City. If he wins that, he will go on to international competition in Switzerland. He won the national competition last year as a junior, but was not allowed to continue to international competition reserved only for seniors. Joshua is the son of Beth and Floyd Kurtz of Fleetwood. Joshua plans to work full time on the fami ly farm this summer. After gradua tion from the Mechanics Institute he plans to return to the family farm and farm in partnership with his dad and also operate a mechan ical repair shop on the farm.
