milk south, the Wilkinsons sent
theirs to a processing plant in
Mount Holly.

Hay production, another major
part of the operation, helps to feed
the animals on Getty Acres. It is
also sold as feed. Two tractor
trailers travel many months of the
year between the farm and the
mushroom industry in Kenent
Square, where it is used as mulch.
Lany explained that they usual
ly have a window of one week for
good hay-making. But by July 1
the hay is too mature for good
feed, and this is what is produced

hear of their selection for the
Clean Water Farm Award given
by the Adams County Conserva
tion District
David Kano, Jr., Chesapeake
Bay nutrient management techni
cian, said the award was initiated
in 1986 to recognize farm opera
tors who are protecting local water
quality, and ultimately the Chesa
peake Bay, by implementing ex
emplary farm management prac
tices. Every conservation district
in the bay watershed is encour
aged to submit an application
identifying one farmer in their
county who meets criteria regard
ing soil testing, manure testing,
nutrient management, pesticide
management, and conservation
practices.
Larry first contacted the district
for conservation assistance in
1977 and all of the 2,800 acres
fanned have conservation plans.
On the tracts owned by Wilkin
sons there are 885 feet of diver
sions 2,187 feet of terraces planted
and maintained in grass, 8,700
feet of subsurface drainage (tile),
two water control structures,
1,300 feet of underground outlet,
2,480 feet of waterways, and three
manure storages.
On the rented acres, Kann said,
there are a large number in hay,
two water control structures, and

are maintained in grass.
