Notebook
Ida Risser
Our locust trees are white with
blossoms and it reminds me that
long ago this was the time that my
parents allowed me to go bare
footed I still enjoy doing that, but
it is embarrassing to be caught on
a Sunday afternoon.
I’m a lot more conscious of the
hot sun than 1 was years ago.
When I was in my teens, I babysat
some young boys who swam in
the Conestoga River all day long.
They were accustomed to the sun
but I was not and so I got a severe
sunburn. There were big blisters

on my shoulders that made it diffi
cult to wear clothes for a few days.
We never even knew of sunblock
lotion when I was a youngster. So,
now I try to do most of my outside
work in the morning. I’ve even
bought myself a large wide brim
med straw hat But, I must get ac
customed to wearing it
The yellow string beans that I
planted the end of March did not
get frozen this year and so we
should have an early crop. The
sugar peas are almost ready and I
do enjoy the green onions that I
can pull fresh from my garden.
Today, May 30, our church will
celebrate its 40th birthday and one
of the first ministers will return to
preach. When we started to attend
this church in the 19605, we had
six children to get ready for Sun
day School and our youngest was
only months old. It was always a
big rush to get the milking done on
time for church.
Now the church has grown to
almost 2,000 members. And, if
you regularly attend the early ser
vice, then you barely know the
folks who come to the late service.
But there are so many small inter
est groups such as “Singles Over
60,” “Men’s Breakfast,” “Morn
ing Prayer,” “Highlites,” “Renew
al Circle," and “Global Outreach.”
Here is where you can get to know
fellow members much better.
