Since 1993, he has been publisher of Suburban Publications (a division of Journal Register Company in Wayne) and Hanover Publications/Evcning Sun (a divi sion of Media News Group of Hanover). In making the retirement announcement, Campbell who owned Lancaster Farming prior to its sale to Lancaster Newspapers in 1987, said it is time to let the next team take over. “After 43 years, I think it is time to turn the operation over to a new generation,” Campbell said. “It was a great experience developing Lancaster Farming, Saturday, May 30, 1998-A27 an idea into a successful business.” The impact on the regional agri business economy by Robert Campbell in his work as publisher of Lancaster Farming is well documented. Many ag leaders believe he has done more for agri culture than any other person in the business. Campbell is also well known in the area for his active participation in various groups and organiza tions over the years. He is a past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, a former board member of AAA, a past president of American Busi ness Clubs, Conestoga Chapter, and a former regional board mem ber of Mellon Bank, to ruunc a few. JUNE si A native of Lancas ter, Campbell graduated from the Valley Forge Military Academy and the University of Pen nsylvania’s Wharton School He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and received two bronze stars. Later he worked for Lancaster Newspap ers in retail advertising before leaving to help start Lancaster Farm ing in 19SS. Campbell worked as general man ager of the paper for three years before pur chasing it In accepting the gen eral manager position Burgess said he was pleased to be able to continue the tradition of service to the farm community. “Over the years, this publication has become the clearing house for news and advertising messages the farmer needs to run a fanning operation.” Burgess said. “Many people call it the farmer’s bible.
