the date Mount St. Helens in Washington erupted,
killing 57. According to the scale devised by Charles
W. Richter in 1935, an earthquake magnitude of 1 is
detectable only by instruments; 2 is barely detectable,
even near the epicenter; 3 is felt indoors; 4 is felt by
