Before the Zipper
April 29, 1913, marked one of several patents on what
became the modern-day zipper. It didn’t find its
name until 1921, when the Goodrich company started
trying to advertise its “Mystik Boot with the patented
Hookless Fastener. Opens with a pul). Closes with a
pull.” Bertram G. Work, company presi- '
dent, wanted to give salesmen a better
tag, “something to dramatize the way the
thing zips. Why not call it the Zipper?’
So, in 1923,'Zippers were first advertised
being made only by Goodrich, referrin
the galoshes, or trademarked Zipper Bi
Zipper later became the generic name
device itself.
Advertisements contain the only truths to
he relied on in a newspaper.
ns* To make a metal zipper slide more easily, rub It with
soap.
