Farm Bureau Holds Women’s Luncheon KAREN BUTLER Maryland Correspondent NEW MIDWAY, Md. The fellowship was fun, the food deli cious, and the entertainment de lightful at the Frederick County Farm Bureau women’s committee spring luncheon. About 160 Farm Bureau women and friends ga thered here at the fire hall for the afternoon program that included speakers from both the American Farm Bureau and Maryland Farm Bureau. Following a lunch of roast turkey catered by the fire hall, the women were treated to musical se lections performed by the Catoctin Canaries, a local group of seniors. Steve Weber, Maryland Farm Bureau president, talked about some of the challenges MFB has faced during the past year. The or ganization has made an effort to re-focus on its membership, and tried to increase member numbers. The members are “really the foundation of Farm Bureau,” he said. Weber related some of the ex periences MFB has had in Anna polis this year in working to get legislation passed that will favor Maryland fanners. “I’m proud to say we’re very pleased with all the support we’ve received,” he told the women, many of whom had written letters and made phone calls to their legislators, “You should be proud of the support the ag community has given.” Leona Dell of Carroll County represents the women of the northeast in the American Farm Bureau as the northeast women’s committee chair. She shared some information on what farm women have been doing at the national level Sha said in February more than 20 states participated in observing Food Checkout Day. The day was designed to bring attention to the affordability of food in America. Dell herself went to Chicago for a celebration of the day that in cluded closing off a main street and bringing in a big Case tractor to deliver food to the needy. She and several other women were each given $lOO to shop for food they then delivered to a Ronald McDonald house, where sick chil dren and their families stay when getting treatment at a hospital The women stocked the shelves of the Ronald McDonald House. “Ron ald McDonald was present CBS, ABC. and NBC were there for publicity of the American farmer produced food,” Dell said. Dell also attended the Ag Women’s Leadership Network conference in Washington, D.C. The network is comprised of 11 organizations of farm women. She said, “I represented American Farm Bureau women on that group. It provided in-roads into places American Farm Bureau women don’t always get into.” In June she will attend the second In ternational Conference on Women in Agriculture in Washington, D.C.. The first conference was held last year in Australia. Louise Ediger, of the Frederick County Farm Bureau women, ex plained a mobile Ag In The Class room unit project that will be launched this spring in Frederick City schools. The women are helping suport the unit financially and with volunteer time. “The women’s committee has always been for ag education,” said Mrs. Ediger. “You must understand that however hard we work, it is the principal of the school that has the final say” about whether the unit will visit the school. So far three schools have signed up for the program. The Catoctin Canaries. 16-member musical group, cov ered all the bases and pulled out all the stops in their musical re view. Their presentation ran from charming to hysterically funny as they performed old classics and dressed up in costumes for skits and charades. The seniors framed an Easter bonnet parade that wove through the audience, and finished with impersonations of popular characters that had the crowd in stitches. Ryan Eaves. For the fourth year in a row the Frederick County women have been honored as the outstanding women’s committee at the state convention. Women’s committee officers are: Louise Stup, chairperson: Evelyn Wilcom, vice chairperson; Terrie Stup. recording secretary; Rosa Rippeon, corresponding se cretary; and Louise Ediger, trea surer. The spring luncheon com mittee consisted of Terrie Stup, Alice Wilcom. Frances Black, Peggy Garst, Evelyn Gaver, Jenny Rhoderick, and Rena Shry. York Speech Contest Trisha Krick of Muddy Creek Forks received first place In the York County FFA public speaking contest and fourth place in the area com petition for her speech about “State Game Lands—Let’s Enjoy Them Together.” She is the daughter of Steve and Dolores Krick of Muddy Creek Forks and a freshman at Kennard-Dale High School.
