National Arbor Day
The fourth Fnday in April (April 24, this year) is now
the day most commonly observed for Arbor Day in
our country. If you’ve ordered trees from a mail-order
nursery and they arrive with the plant roots wrapped but
bare of soil, be sure to keep them moist until you can
put them in their final places. If they
arrive before you’re ready, consider
“heeling them in,” which means
covenng the roots and a bit of the
stem withtwet sawdust or com
posted soil If they amve with some JB
soil around them, you’ve got time
to spare. Be sure you dig the
hole at least a foot wider and deeper than the root ball
You’ll be glad you did.

Praline Cookies
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter,
softened
1-1/2 cups brown sugar
1 egg
1-1/2 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup chopped pecans
Beat together butter and
sugar, add egg and
beat well, then stir in
flour, vanilla, and nuts
Chill the dough for 1
hour Roll dough into
balls and place 3 inches
