CtLaneastar Farming, Saturday, Aprff 11, 1998 National Farmers Union Urges Lawmakers To Distinguish Between Children Who Are Exploited And Children Who Work On The Family Farm SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. National Farmers Union (NFU) asked that lawmakers acknow ledge the vast difference between children who are being exploited in agricultural production and those who work on their parents’ or neighbors’ farm when making new laws. NFU’s recommenda tions coincide today’s release by the General Accounting Office of a report on children in the agri cultural workplace. “Children who work with their families on farms benefit from learning new skills, developiing ‘Lacy’ New Milk, Protein Record Holder BELOIT, Wis. Rolling Meadows Dot son Lacy “VB7-VB6MS," a K Top Acres Dotson ET daughter, is the new Brown Swiss breed record holder for milk and protein with a record of 46.690 M 5.0% 2.348 F 3.7% 1.716 P ata 7-07 in 365 days. “Lacy’s” record-breaking production levels of milk and protein came as no surprise to Rolling Meadows Swiss of Columbiana, Ohio, since she is a maternal sister to-Rolling Meadows Dots Lady “V 88,” the past milk and current fat record holder. This strong line of high producing animals doesn't stop there. “Lacy’s" dam, Johann Lovely Lace ET “V 88” has lifetime totals to 205,500 M 8,760 F 7,324 P in 2,917 days and is a mater nal sister to the number one protein bull on the INTERBULL proofs, Etazon Energy with +74P. “Lacy’s" daughters. Rolling Meadows Baerga Lin and Rolling Meadows A 1 Lacy, are also making names for themselves in the world of high producing Brown Swiss cows. Mark Winner states, “We thought that Baer ga was a perfect cross for Lacy, combining two great cow families of the breed, Priscilla and Sunny View Improved Lady. The result was Lin and in our opinion, she is a fantastic milk cow with a large frame, well-attached udder and a very good set of feet and legs.” “Lin” was the number one cow on the Febru ary 1998 Supplemental Cow High Protein List (previously Supplemental CPI List), with +IOSP. She will also be the classleader for milk, fat and protein in the junior 2-year old division, with a record of 32.806 M 4.2% 1.377 F 3.6% I,IBOP at 2-01 in 288 days. “Lacy’s" other daughter, “A 1 Lacy," has re cords to 24.570 M 3.8% 935 F 3.4% 840 P at 2-03 in 365 days. “Lacy," at 9 years old, is housed with the rest of the Rolling Meadows herd in a free stall environment, and is still going strong. “Lacy has a tremendous body with a good set of feet and legs, as well as a well-attached ud der," comments Mark. Embryos and bulls will be available from “Lacy" and “Lin." Mark states, “We have bred Brown Swiss cows here at Rolling Meadows for over 60 years and since we do not show, we breed for high production and functional type." The Winners believe that the Brown Swiss breed has a tremendous production capability if more people would breed for it Rolling Mea dows Farm and Mark offer this advice to fel low Brown Swiss breeders, “As a breed, we have to stress more production and not con centrate exclusively on type.” This is the philosophy that Rolling Mea dows has followed over the years and that they will continue to follow in the future. Congratulations to Rolling Meadows for breeding and developing such high produc ing Brown Swiss cows. The Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders’ Asso ciation, headquartered in Beloit, Wisconsin, was founded to serve as the national or ganization for the registration and promotion of Brown Swiss cattle. confidence and learning how to earn money,” said California Farmers Union President Scott Magneson who submitted testi mony on behalf of NFU at the for um on Children in the Agricultural Workforce, held here today. “However, the dangers of children in the workforce outweigh the benefits if children are only being used as a cheap Substitute for jobs that should be performed by adults.” Magneson, who with his family operates a dairy farm south of Sa cramento, said that NFU opposes PENNSYLVANIA ALBURtIS/LEHIGH VALLEY Canns-Bilco Outdoor Power Equipment 1 Mile West of Warrensville on Route 973 using children as part of the agri cultural workforce if it means tak ing children out of school or if the children are forced to live in con ditions that are substandard. “For those who grow up on a farm, working side by side with other family members is part of daily life. One of the key reasons people choose the occupation of farming is to enable them to work together as a family,” Magneson said. Magneson also said that chil dren hired by neighboring farm families to help with milking or harvest are rarely among those who are exploited.
