Com- (Continued from Pag* A 10) the equipment that we already have. Financial planning for farms of any size is next to impossible because of the uncertainty of the price of milk. The average age of a dairy farmer today is 58 years old. They have raised their children on farms that have been in their family for generations. Parents hope to pass their farms on to their children. It is not happen ing. Their children see the love and care their parents put into their farms, but also see the hardships that they have encountered. They end up get ting off the farm jobs, leaving no one to take over the farm. Small farms spread through out the state are better for the environment than large farms that have a high concentration of animals. Expansion is a never ending rat race because of the huge cost involved and milk prices that are too low to produce enough acreage to support expansion. I have witnessed the indifference of the govern ment and a willingness to allow 1 our nation to become dependent on foreign food. A safe and abun dant food supply is not some thing to be gambled with in order to save a few cents. That is why the Northeast Interstate Dairy Compact is needed to set a reasonable price on class I milk which would sta- bilize the overall price of milk. I urge you to write or call your Pennsylvania state Senator, and ask them to support the Northeast Interstate Dairy Compact or Senate Bill No. 170. This is only a short term solu tion. In the long term farmers need to be involved in the pric ing of their milk. That is why it is important to join ARMPPA. ARMPPA, American Raw Milk Producers Pricing Association is the only nationwide bargaining agency truly interested in get ting a fair price for milk for dairy farmers. For more infor mation on ARMPPA call (717) 833-4592.
