York Extension Offers Beef Management Short Course YORK (York Co.) - Penn State Cooperative Extension has developed a six week beef short course to be offered on Tuesday evenings, beginning on March 24th Most of the sessions will be conducted at the York County 4- H Center at Bair, PA. Sessions will be held from 7:30 - 9:30 PM. The York 4-H Center is located at 771 Stoverstown Road, just off Route 116 west of York. The management short course will provide information for those just getting started in beef production or those who wish to increase their knowledge of beef production. The third session will focus on beef health issues. Dr. David Wolfgang, D.V.M., field investi gator with PSU's Veterinary Science Department will speak on important beef health issues including; vaccination programs for the beef cow/calf producer, biosecurity for beef operations, health programs for receiving feeder cattle and topical anato my of the beef animal. Extension Agronomist John Rowehl will discuss pasture and forage management issues at the April 14th session. This will include forage establishment and maintenance, pasture graz ing management practices, weed control and forage species char acteristics. Agent Tim Beck will address beef nutrition with emphasis on evaluating forage quality and planning feeding programs for the cow/calf opera tion and the stocker grazing operation. On April 21st, the group will take farm tours to Wayne Hoffman’s beef finishing opera tion in the Dover area and to South Branch Farms to tour a purebred Angus beef cow/calf operation. between Clarks Creek and Peters Mountain.
