Dean Amick Wins National DHIA Award

nia DHIA, is die recipient of the
1997 Martin A. Wilson Memorial
Award.
Dean Began his 40-year plus
career with Pennsylvania DHIA in
1954 testing II herds totaling 400
cows. Sixteen yean later he was
testing a 90-herd circuit
In 1970, Dean was chosen to
manage Pennsylvania DHIA’s
first Centralized Milk Testing
Lab. This lab was one of the first
large-scale labs nationwide.
Dean was responsible for an
other first in the late 1970 s when
he brought Pennsylvania’s lab into
the computer age, making it the
first computerized lab operation in
the country. His efforts changed
lab operations nationwide making
them more efficient and improv
ing the quality of their testing.
Dean assumed re
sponsibility for all
Pennsylvania DHIA
support operations in
1988. In this capacity,
he developed a system
lo transport milk sam
ples with refrigerated
trucks, a procedure for
recycling sample vials
and a unique liquid pre
servative dispenser for
vial preparation.
Dean has been the
director of field opera
tions and marketing
since 1990. He super
vises over 130 DHIA
technicians testing over
220,000 cows. Dean has
been inducted into the
DHIA Hall of Fame.
Dean also was the
first recipient for the
Dean Amick Award of
Excellence. This award
was created in honor of
Dean for his many years
of service and many ac
complishment within
DHIA.
Currently, Dean is a
member of Dairy Shrine
and The Pennsylvania
All-American Dairy
Show committee. He is
also a former president
of NALMA.
Dean and his wife,
Shirley, have two child
ren and one grandchild.
