    A22-Lancasfer Farming, Saturday, February 28, 1998
(Continued from Page A 1)
The 1998 convention opened
Wednesday with a number of semi
nars related to the business of the
dairy farmer. For example, a panel
of dairy farmers discussed their
experiences in diversifying rather
than expanding their present dairy
hods. Members of this panel are:
Dave Bitler, Fleetwood, who,
along with his family, milks 100
cows, farms 500 acres, has a
25,0001 b. herd average, and a BAA
of 107. They raise all bull calves.
TV high pedigreed bulls are sold
for herd sires. The side-line busi
ness has evolved for freezer beef,
and they organize tours, one to the
World Dairy Expo.
Vernon Seip, Lansdale. who,
along with his large family, milk
100 cows, operate a dairy retail
store, and miniature golf course. In
more recent years, a sit-down ice
cream parlor, a petting zoo, and a
driving range and batting cage
have been added. October Fall Fest
features pick your own pumpkins
and child-oriented activities such
as school tours.

with his family, milks 100 cows,
sells a few top quality bulls to
bteeding studs and has done some
embryo transplants. Recently sur
rounding farms have become
available to rent at a reasonable
rate for farming. This year they
plan to farm 850 acres with grain as
the new cash crop. Along die way,
a vegetable retail outlet at the farm
for die nearby townspeople has
been developed. The produce from
10 acres of sweet com, one acre of
strawberries, one acre of pump
kins, and some other vegetables in
season. In addition, Dan sells seed
com.
The purpose of this seminar was
to get a feel for why these farmers
decided to diversify rather than
expand their herds. The farmers
added special insight to the
discussion.
Some of the pants in the discus
sion are:
• You need to look at your
resources and what you like to do.
Most fanners like to farm, some
also like to meet people, some do
not.
