Rumler Scholarship Available

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. - Dairy graduates who are interested in pursuing a Master's Degree
in Business Administration are encouraged to apply for the Robert H Rumler Scholarship The
$3,000 award is given by Holstein Association USA
The scholarship is awarded annually to a recipient who has graduated from an accredited
agricultural college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in dairy production or its equivalent
It may be given to a student at the beginning of their MBA program or who is entering the second
year of the program
The scholarship program was started in 1984 by the Association to honor Rumler, who
had served as executive secretary of the Holstein Association Rumler had worked for 36 years
for the Association, and was named Chairman Emeritus of the Association at the time of his
retirement
Eligibility requirements include'
1 Applicants must have graduated from an accredited agricultural college or
university with a Bachelor's Degree in Dairy Production or its equivalent.
2 The applicant should have ranked in the upper one-third of the agricultural
graduates of the college or university granting the applicant's B S degree
3 Significant extracurricular activities as an undergraduate will receive
consideration.
4. While not an unqualified requirement, heavy preference will be given to
applicants having had several years of work experience following receipt of a
Bachelor’s Degree. Evaluation of leadership qualities, management aptitude,
executive intuition and personal traits evidenced during this period will weight
heavily in the selection process
5 Previous applicants may reapply, providing eligibility requirements are met A
previous recipient will be eligible for only one additional scholarship to complete
degree requirements
Applications for the scholarship are due April 15, 1998. They can be obtained either
through the Office of the Dean at agricultural colleges, or from the Holstein Association, by

New York native accepts challenge of Holstein Foundation
BRATTLEBORO. Vt - Donna Beal, of Westport, N Y., has joined the Holstein Foundation as the
Director of Development. In this capacity, she will be responsible for planning, developing, and
implementing fundraising strategies for the Foundation
Before joining the Foundation, she was Vice-President for Administration and Development at
Ecologically Sustainable Development, Inc. (ESD), where she developed support for international
sustainable development programs designed to provide technical assistance to people in countries
transitioning to a market economy ESD’s work focused primarily on sustainable development
programs in Russia, China, and Nicaragua.
Prior to Beal’s tenure with BSD, she served as Administrator and Membership Director at the
Adirondack Council, a non-profit organization which works to protect the Adirondack Park. The
Council’s membership grew from 3,000 to over 18,000 members under Beal’s membership program
management
“My plans are to help the Foundation attract increased resources to underwrite programs such
as Young Dairy Leaders Institute (YDLI), where young producers develop the leadership and
communication skills they need to meet the challenges of the rapidly-changing dairy industry,” she said
Beal will work closely with the Holstein Foundation’s Board of Trustees and other Foundation
staff Ellen Memll is the lead staff person working to develop the next YDLI and Kelli Devino heads
up the Foundation’s youth programs.
Beal’s home is in Westport, New York She is married and has two children.
The Holstein Foundation is a non-breed specific organization dedicated to preparing
tomorrow’s dairy leaders for the future through educational progams and workbooks, research,

Wanted: Young Dairy
Leaders For YDLI
BRATTLEBORO, Vt - Applications for the next Young Dairy Leaders Institute (YDLI) are
now available. The Young Dairy Leaders Institute (YDLI) is a national program sponsored by the
Holstein Foundation that focuses on advanced leadership and personal development training for
young producers in the dairy industry.
YDLI’s goal is to stimulate and prepare young dairy producers to play a more active role in
directing the future of the dairy industry through positive involvement in the industry, their
communities and in the political process Close to 200 individuals throughout the dairy industry
have participated in the two previous YDLI classes
Dairy producers between the ages of 22 and 40, regardless of breed affiliation, are invited to
apply for acceptance into this in-depth leadership program. One-hundred dairy producers from
across the nation will be chosen to participate based on their potential for leadership and
commitment to the future of the dairy industry.
YDLI is a three-phase program that begins with a three-day leadership conference scheduled
for February 4-6,1999 in Tampa, FL. Participants will emphasize public & persuasive speaking
skills, goal setting, and various interpersonal skills Key focus areas will be dealing with problems
within the dairy industry, conflicts from outside factors and how to be an effective member of
professional, local, and governmental organizations.
The second phase takes place when Institute members use the year to become more active in
their industry, community and government. Members will be expected to give presentations and
to take on leadership roles in a variety of organizations
The final phase of YDLI will take place in the form of an “Issues and Information”
conference scheduled for February 3-5,2000 in Tampa, FL This conference will build on
leadership experiences from phases 1 & 2 and explore current and future issues affecting the
dairy industry.
“YDLI is by far the best leadership program we have ever taken part in,” said Duane Hershey,
who with his wife Marilyn participated in the very first YDLI “We’ve been to several similar
programs, but YDLI was well-run, well-organized and definitely worth our time ” Both Duane
and Marilyn are involved in several organizations and groups

BRATTLEBORO, Vt - Holstein breeders who submit registry applications using the latest
version of EASY (Electronic Application System) will receive a $2 per animal discount up to a
maximum discount of $4O This special discount offer is good through June 20, 1998
EASY is the Holstein Association’s free IBM-compatible software program that allows
producers to automate the identification process using an on-farm PC, eliminating paper
applications. Producers using EASY can simply mail a diskette containing the necessary
information to the Holstein Association
The innovative computer software program also is compatible with all of the ID options:
photos, sketches, Tag ID, Tag 'N Tattoo, and Tag 'N Freezebrand It is also capable of reading
from other heifer management files to speed up the identification process.
This is a one-time offer for breeders who begin using EASY for Windows 3 0 or EASY for DOS
3 0 It applies to new EASY users and to those who upgrade from older versions of EASY (for
example Windows 2 0 and DOS 2.3)
The changes contained in EASY 3 0 were made to facilitate the American ID numbering system
and the new herdbook structure. Therefore, it is important that the new versions be adopted by users
