Fit For The Governor
felt it would more appreciated to
give of their time and money to
those who are really in need The
Water Street Rescue Mission
depends upon the generosity of
others to help meet the daily
demand for meals for the homeless
and those down on their luck.
Poultry Ambassador Kendra
Weaver presented a certificate to
Gov. Tom Ridge during Farm
Show festivities. The certificate
stated that the Association was giv
ing a luncheon at the Water Street
Rescue Mission in his honor.
Although the Governor was
unable to attend, the administration
was represented by Deputy Execu
tive Secretary Zoann Parker, who
donned a hairnet and helped serve
the luncheon to patrons.
Dr. John Schwartz, county
extension director, and Poultry
Ambassador Kendra Weaver and
her mother helped board members
of the Association serve the lunc
heon. Board members included Liz
Martin, Tom Fox, Car! Rohrer,
John Swartz, Rich Roejnic, Doug
Mentzler, Ron Duvall, George
Georges, and Matdlio.
The Association solicited dona
tions and purchased some of the
items to serve a menu that included
Pennfield baked chicken legs,
mashed potatoes, green beans,
salad, applesauce, hard boiled
eggs, drinks and three varieties of
ice cream from Turkey Hill.
Matdlio said, “Serving food at
Water Street Rescue Mission
encourages others to give time,
food, and money to an organization
that survives by donations. The
Rescue Mission is a self-help orga
nization that is incredibly well
organized. Although it is right in
our (Lancaster’s) backyard, it is
not a charity that most people tradi
tionally think of helping. We hope
this will encourage others to
become involved.”
The Association wants people to
remember that the occasional
offensive odors of poultry fanning
is greatly offset by the nutritious
poultry products available to con
sumers everyday. Poultry is con
sidered one of the most appealing,
nutritious, and economical protein
sources available.
The Association offers educa
tional seminars to the farmers,
holds an annual banquet for county
home economics teachers to
update them on available poultry
products and proper handling and
cooking to ensure food safety, pro
vides materials and speakers for
the Ag in the Classroom programs,
and sells poultry products at the
Ephrata Fair Booth.
