Carroll County 4-H Honors Leaders, Members
KAREN BUTLER
Maryland Correspondent
WESTMINSTER, Md. - After
years of serving the 4-H dairy
program in Carroll County as a
volunteer club leader and county
dairy superintendent, Carol
DeGroff is moving to another
state. DeGroff was honored at
the annual 4-H Dairy Banquet
here by approximately 75 youth
and family members. The group
gathered at Burns Hall the ag
center for the covered dish sup
per and program.
Bob Shirldy, 4-H Extension
agent, thanked DeGroff for her
years of generous service. "We
are blessed to have the right
kind of people teaching," he said,
"Carroll County does have one of
the best programs, and it's
because of the 4-H club mem
bers, parents, and volunteers. I
want to thank Carol DeGroff for
her outstanding years of service
and dedication to the 4-H pro
gram." He presented DeGroff
with a plaque commemorating
her years of service. She was
also presented with a yellow and
chocolate cake baked and deco
rated by Crystal Dell.
Mrs. DeGroff said she started
helping in the dairy department
about 14 years ago, and her
involvement grew over the
years. Her volunteer experience
includes serving as leader of the
Union Bridge club and the
Carroll County Dairy club. "And
I sort of inherited the dairy
department," she recalled, "and
was superintendent of the dairy
department of the county fair,
which meant serving on the fair
board."
The strength of the dairy pro
gram in the county was high
lighted by the recognition of two
young ladies who represented
Carroll County and the state in
National Dairy contests
Kristin Myers, New Windsor,
was a member of the senior
Dairy Bowl team that took top
honors at the state fair and went
on to participate in the national
contest. "For three consecutive
years Kristin has been the first
place individual at the state
level," said coach Lisa
Schwartzbeck. The coach noted
each member of the senior coun

as individuals at the state level.
Other senior team members
included Brett Haines, Gary
Brauning, and Josh Sanders.
The intermediate Dairy Bowl
team, all novices, consisted of
Samantha Stambaugh, Jennifer
Stambaugh, and Ashley
Burdette. The junior Dairy
Bowl team was the second place
team at the state contest, with
team member Ryan Haines com

Jeena Rinehart, Taneytown,
was a member of the senior
dairy judging team that was the
second-place team at the state

spot on the Maryland team that
went to the North American
International Livestock

Louisville for the Dairy Cattle
Judging contest. There, out of
78 contestants, she placed first
in Holsteins, second in
Ayreshires and Guernseys, sev

teenth in Jerseys. She also
placed fifth in oral reasons, and
was high individual in the con

The junior dairy judging
team was the first-place team at
the state contest. Jenae
Rinehart was first individual
overall, and Brandi Burdette
was second individual overall.
The intermediate team placed
third at the state contest.
The Carroll County Dairy
