Carroll County 4-H Honors Leaders, Members KAREN BUTLER Maryland Correspondent WESTMINSTER, Md. - After years of serving the 4-H dairy program in Carroll County as a volunteer club leader and county dairy superintendent, Carol DeGroff is moving to another state. DeGroff was honored at the annual 4-H Dairy Banquet here by approximately 75 youth and family members. The group gathered at Burns Hall the ag center for the covered dish sup per and program. Bob Shirldy, 4-H Extension agent, thanked DeGroff for her years of generous service. "We are blessed to have the right kind of people teaching," he said, "Carroll County does have one of the best programs, and it's because of the 4-H club mem bers, parents, and volunteers. I want to thank Carol DeGroff for her outstanding years of service and dedication to the 4-H pro gram." He presented DeGroff with a plaque commemorating her years of service. She was also presented with a yellow and chocolate cake baked and deco rated by Crystal Dell. Mrs. DeGroff said she started helping in the dairy department about 14 years ago, and her involvement grew over the years. Her volunteer experience includes serving as leader of the Union Bridge club and the Carroll County Dairy club. "And I sort of inherited the dairy department," she recalled, "and was superintendent of the dairy department of the county fair, which meant serving on the fair board." The strength of the dairy pro gram in the county was high lighted by the recognition of two young ladies who represented Carroll County and the state in National Dairy contests Kristin Myers, New Windsor, was a member of the senior Dairy Bowl team that took top honors at the state fair and went on to participate in the national contest. "For three consecutive years Kristin has been the first place individual at the state level," said coach Lisa Schwartzbeck. The coach noted each member of the senior coun ty team had placed in the top 10 as individuals at the state level. Other senior team members included Brett Haines, Gary Brauning, and Josh Sanders. The intermediate Dairy Bowl team, all novices, consisted of Samantha Stambaugh, Jennifer Stambaugh, and Ashley Burdette. The junior Dairy Bowl team was the second place team at the state contest, with team member Ryan Haines com ing in as second place individ ual. Other members were Jon Sanders, Davis Schwartzbeck, Matthew Brauning, and Brandi Burdette. Jeena Rinehart, Taneytown, was a member of the senior dairy judging team that was the second-place team at the state contest. Jeena earned herself a spot on the Maryland team that went to the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville for the Dairy Cattle Judging contest. There, out of 78 contestants, she placed first in Holsteins, second in Ayreshires and Guernseys, sev enth in Brown Swiss, and four teenth in Jerseys. She also placed fifth in oral reasons, and was high individual in the con test. The junior dairy judging team was the first-place team at the state contest. Jenae Rinehart was first individual overall, and Brandi Burdette was second individual overall. The intermediate team placed third at the state contest. The Carroll County Dairy Judging teams include the fol lowing: senior - Jeena Rinehart, Amy Miller, Brett Haines, and Jeff Sutton; intermediate - Ashley Burdette, Jarrod Burall, David Miller, and Danielle Hess; junior - Ryan Haines, Brandi Burdette, Jenae Rinehart, Jon Sanders and Jason Finger, alter nate. Anne Davis is the coach. The four Maryland youth who went to NAILE were Jeena Rinehart and Mike Creek, Hagerstown; Barbara Schen ning, Bel Air; and Amanda Valentine, Emmitsburg. The four ranked very well both as a team and as individuals. In team results Maryland placed first in Guernseys and Jerseys, second in Holsteins and Ayreshires, and sixth in Brown Swiss.
