DMancastar Farmli Protecting broiler health Protecting broiler health basi cally means preventing disease, not only preventing sickness or death, but broiler health also means preventing subtle, ** sub clinical disease effects that de crease overall performance of the flock. What are we trying to pre fect? The three important areas of concentration are livability, per formance at the farm, and per formance at the processing plant. First, we want to protect liv ability throughout the life of the broiler during the brooding, grow ing and finishing phases. Some early chick mortality problems may be out of the control of the grower (may be breeder flock or hatchery related), but being able to do the most with the chicks that are received is a realistic goal. Second, we want to protect per formance on the farm. Efforts here are targeted toward optimizing growth, flock uniformity, and feed conversion. Last, but not least, we want to protect performance at the processing plant—to optimize carcass grade and minimize con demnations such as air sac, Sep- mm Brillion am aaaaaafm^ : I When Looking For Quality - BUY BRILLION SURE STAND SEEDERS 5 FT -8 FT.-10 FT -12 FT. 1 For years Bnllion Grass Seeders have proven to be the best machine lor plantmggrasses and legumes and now they re even better' Larger, heavier boxes high seeding rates, nylon lined seed meter heavier frame new drive system and more Available In 3-poml, Cor pull type. Disease prevention Disease prevention is para mount in achieving these goals. What are the determinants to the development of disease within populations of birds? Sometimes all that is needed is contact of the host, in this case the broiler, with a disease-causing agent (bacteria, virus, parasite, mold, poison). However, usually disease is the result of a complex interaction of factors in the life of the broiler that also includes the environ ment. Factors such as tempera ture, air quality, space, litter condition, feed and water quality all impact the host and the disease agent, and ultimately determine whether or not disease will occur in a flock. Another way to look at this interaction is to see the host in balance with the potential micro bial agents and other environ mental factors. Picture the broiler perched on one end of a balanced see-saw and the microbes on the other end. Compound this with sub-optimal management and adverse environmental conditions in combination with the mi crobes, and the situation becomes even worse. On the other hand, if few or no agents are present and the environment is clean and little stress is present, the bird side is favored and tends to stay “grounded” and free of disease. Unique to raising broilers is the fact that the bird has a very short life span (averaging ap proximately 7 weeks) and is a very young juvenile bird, even at the end of the production cycle. If a health problem occurs, particu larly after 3 to 4 weeks, there is Y SOIL BUILDERS f 5-7-9-11-13 Shanks gang can Hydraulically co., save maintenance dollars Available in J & 3 bar > Y FLAIL SHREDDERS f 12 Ft and 15 Ft FLAIL SHREDDERS Heaviest gearbox on the market eliminates the number one cause of downtime Available in 12' and 15' Either cup or side slicer knives . Depending upon the particular disease pres ent, increased mortality, uneven ness and/or condemnations may result. Broilers present challenges in that a very intense effort to manage the flock must be made • over a short period of time. This is true in keeping certain diseases out completely (e.g., laryngotra cheitis, avian influenza, my coplasmosis, etc.) and limiting the effects of other disease agents that are inevitably present in the broiler environment (e.g. coccidia, infectious bronchitis virus, Marek’s disease virus, etc.). Controlling avian disease There are five general methods of control of avian disease: reduc ing exposure to pathogens, reduc ing stress, vaccination, medication, and eradication. Of these, the first three are most im portant in primary disease preven tion in the modem broiler industry. Of course, eradication has been instrumental in prevent ing vertical transmission of pul lorum disease, MG and MS, which has helped broiler health dramatically. Medication is important, par ticularly in preventative levels such as anticoccidial drugs to pre vent coccidiosis and feed grade an tibiotics to help reduce the incidence of necrotic enteritis However, if you have to treat a (Turn lo Pag* D 3) quality from the ground up.
