A2O-I ( ancaater Farming, Saturday, January 31, 1998 Volunteer Corn Could Pose Challenges ANDY ANDREWS Lancaster Farming Staff GUTHRIES VILLE (Chester Co.) Voluntary com awn seeds shed from an ear that pop up like weeds the following season, hurting good com yields is already a problem in Pennsylvania. But if fanners aren’t vigilant in their field management of new Roundup Ready varieties, the genetically enhanced, herbicide resistant com can pose additional challenges as volunteer com when fields are rotated to soybeans. When using the Roundup Ready variet ies, “use good planning and thinking and remembering, or you’re going to wind up with a real mess,” said John Yocum, Penn State Southeast Extension Center Research Station manager in Landisville. Yocum spoke to about 80 producers and agri-industry represen tatives Tuesday morn ing during die Penn State-sponsored Ches ter County Crops Day at the Guthriesville Fire Hall. Roundup, a widely used all-purpose herbi cide, will not kill Roundup volunteer com, Yocum noted. The best management strategy is to keep care ful records of what crop win be rotated and to use agronomically recommended products that work on the herbicide-resistant var ieties of the volunteer, com that sprouts. Several applications could end up doing the job, but it’s important to use proper manage ment And it’s impor tant to note that some cross-pollination could occur to make non resistant varieties resis tant when the com re emerges as volunteer com. Additionally, Yocum spoke about new and updated products that are available to growers this year. He also spoke about herbicides that are pending EPA registra tion. Yocum noted that the herbicide “price wars” going on will ben efit growers, especially for soybean products. Prices are coming down more than half, the research station manager noted. Yocum indicated sev eral products new for the market this year, including Accent Gold from DuPont, an alter native to atrazine, con taining Accent and Hor net for broad spectrum control of broadleaves and select grasses; Aim 40DF from FMC, apostcmcrgcnce contact-type heifoicide; Balance 75WDG from Rhone Poulenc, a prcemergent herbicide replace ment for atrazine, offering control of broadlcaf weeds; Field Master 4.25 L from Monsanto, a broad spectrum herbicide for the 1998 season; Pinnacle 2SDF from DuP ont, an early postapplication herbi cide for com; and Spirit S7WG from Novartis. Yocum also noted that Roundup Ready com will be available in limited supplies (about 1 million acres nationwide) from Dekalb. There will only be 2-3 hybrids for this region. /M Lancaster //DHTA LANCASTER DHIA IS CELEBRATING 5 YEARS of SUCCESSFUL SERVICE! with PROGRAMS TO HELP YOU MANAGE YOUR DAIRY HERD - Low-cost unsupervised (owner sampler) program with basic information and fat, protein and SCC data provided • VARIETY - Of management programs available to J meet your needs.
