Ridge opened the 82nd Pennsylvania Farm Show’s Sheep to Shawl contest, and en joyed the work of the four teams with son Tom. The Butler County Peddlers got off to a delayed start when there was a misunderstanding of the starting time and their shearer was hot there on time. Finding a sub stitute shearer cost them time, but in the end they won first place in the contest and the “Weaver’s Award” for the creativity of the design, use of color and skill. They woe second in last year’s contest The shawl was auctioned by Harry Bachman for $375. All four shawls were modeled by Elizabeth Lee Hayes, wife of Agriculture Secretary Samuel E. Hayes Jr., who welcomed the participants. Second place went to the Penn sylvania Mohair & Cashmere Growers Association who were the first to complete a shawl. This is the second year they competed, having won first place in 1997. Their shawl also brought $375 at the auction. They received the “Spinner’s Award” in recognition of the quality of their workman ship and spinner’s team spirit and cooperation. In a vote by contest participants for their favorite, they also received the “Team’s Choice” award. The shawl made by the group con sisted of all Dauphin County wool. It was recognized to be of the highest quality wool and re ceived the “Best Fleece Award.” It was auctioned for $175. Weave Made It produced the fourth place shawl, which was auctioned for $250. Each team is composed of a shearer, a weaver, and three spin ners who competed to craft a qual ity homemade shawl from start to finish. In order to participate in the Farm Show, the team members must all be Pennsylvania residents and have competed or exhibited at two events prior to the Farm Show. The purpose of the Sheep to Shawl contest is to promote public awareness of the contributions made by the sheep and wool in dustry to Pennsylvania agricul ture. It also provides an oppor tunity for craftspeople in the state to showcase their skills. Original ly established in 1981 as the Northeastern Regional competi tion, the Sheep to Shawl contest has been held annually at the Pennsylvania Farm Show, draw ing crowds as large as 5,000 peo ple. Three judges evaluated the teams and scored them on the basis of shearing, speed, uni formity of yam being spun, over all design of the weaving and team identification. Evaluation of the three spinners individually was based on fleece preparation and how their indivi dual spining related to the overall design of the shawl. The completed shawl was also judged for evenness in weaving as well as evenness and lack of pull ins in the selvage edges. The rules require the shawl to be at least 22 inches wide and 78 inches in length. Teams were awarded bonus points for how quickly they finished the shawl.
