Crossbred Wins Junior
ANDY ANDREWS

HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.)
It’s not often that a purebred
hog rises to the top in a junior
market championship show.
But Tuesday’s junior market
swine show activities at the Farm
Show proved differently, when the
judge selected a 261-pound
purebred Hampshire hog, exhi
bited by Janine Winebark of Myer
stown, as reserve supreme champ
ion. Supreme champion went to
the 248-pound crossbred champ
ion shown by Keri Connelly, State

Jim Anderson won champion Chaster White at the Junior
swine show.
At the show. Dr. Lauren Christ
ian brought back his expertise as
professor of animal science at
lowa State University to judge the
junior market swine contest
When he chose the crossbred
champion shown by Keri Connel
ly, Christian noted that the hog
“correct in design” stood out from
the rest When he selected Connel
ly’s 248-pound light heavyweight
class winner, a Hampshire/Duroc
crossbred hog obtained by Roger
Bentley of Washington Court
house, Ohio, as supreme, Christian
spoke about the movement of the
industry to “muscle quality.”
Swine, Purebred Becomes Reserve
That same emphasis on muscle
quality will provide meat from
hogs with “marbling, color,” he
said, and a product that will “not
taste like shoe leather it will be
flavorful.
“There are more important
things in the pig business that how
lean a pig is,” Christian said.
Keri, 13, is the daughter of Ron
and Denise Connelly, State Col
lege. Keri is in the Bth grade at Mt.
Nittany Middle School. This is her
first championship at the Farm
Show, clinched with “Bentley,”
named after the man from whom
she obtained the hog.
Keri said die hog is walked a
half mile every day. It was “hard
work and exercise” that garnered
her a championship, he noted. She
won reserve at the Centre County
Grange Fair. Keri helps out on her
family’s 1,000-acre dairy farm and
raises market swine for showing.
The reserve supreme was a
Hampshire shown by Janine Wine
bark. 13, daughter of Ken and
Janet Winebark, Myerstown.
Janine showed “Jessie,” selected
from her family’s hod, which
numbers a few sows. Janine is in
the Bth grade and is home
schooled.
Reserve crossbred hog went to
Katie Kochera, Series County, for
her 244-pound medium weight
champion, a hog which Christian
said puts “really good things
together in one package.”
There were 356 exhibitors at the
show. Following is a list of show
placings.
