As the re gion’s dairy farmers faced a year of economic challenges, the Northeast Dairy Herd Improve ment Association (DHIA) re-ex amined its businesses, focusing on developing more relevant services and lowering costs to farmers. At the Northeast DHIA annual meeting, held recently in Ithaca, N.Y., Harold W. Bodwell HI. President of die Northeast DHIA Board of Directors, chronicled the organization's achievements of the past year, particularly high lighting the creation of Coopera tive Dairy One, an information technology venture with Dairylea Cooperative Inc. Known as Dairy One, the ven ture began operations in early 1997 with die purpose of develop ing technologies and services to meet the information demands necessary for progressive dairy management At the same time, the alliance allows for the elimina tion of overlapping operations, thereby increasing die economic efficiencies for both organiza tions, which benefits their respec tive memberships. During his remarks, Bodwell noted the significant savings that were realized in the past year through both the creation of Dairy One and the streamlining of Northeast DHIX. “In serving our membership we will continue to address the changing structure of the dairy in dustry,” said Bodwell. “Our chal lenge remains the same how to provide the right herd manage ment information at a competitive cost” Rick Smith, Chief Executive Officer of Dairy One. addressed the delegate body providing an overview of the current Northeast milk pricing climate, as well as the changes occurring within the dairy industry. A We do not fed good knowing that many of our members are caught in the cost/pricc squeeze of today’s milk marketing environ ment.’’ stated Smith. “This has led to a decrease in the number of farms in the Northeast, which af fects die entire agriculture infra- SIMMENTAL Northeast DHIA Reviews Progress At 10th Annual Meeting Ranck Reserve JohnJ Messick Eariy Jr Yearling Heifer, Jan -Feb 1996 1 Shelby Lynn Ranck, 2 Maple Cove Breeders, 3 Troy Larry Gelslnger Senior Yearling Heifer, Sept -Dec 1995 1 Maple Cove Breeders. 2 Lyle Haflett Senior Champion Heifer Shelby Lynn Rarick Reserve Maple Cove Breeders Cow/Call 1 Valene D Blauch, 2 Lyle Haflett Grand Champion Heifer Shelby Lynn Ranck Reserve Haven Woods Farms Summer Bull Calves, May 1997 and after 1 Shelby Lynn Ranck, 2 Michael 0 Messick, 3 Sorrell Acres Farm Varner Late Spnng Bull Calf, Apnl 1997 1 Lee & Linda Snyder, 2 Haven Woods Farms, 3 Michael D Messick Eariy Spnng Bull Calves, March 1997, 1 Haven Woods Farms, 2 Jerry & Ginger Woolcock, 3 James Gertach Jr Bull Calves. We must continue to de velop new ventures and partner ships much like Dairy One in order to create innovative ser vices that enhance dairy fanners' potential for profitability,” Smith added. Following Smith’s report. Dr. Arden Nelson, a veterinarian with Dairy Production Services, mod erated a panel that reviewed sever al of the newer and mere innova tive services available through Dairy One. Panel member Scott Flowers, of Harper Farms in Savannah, N.Y., discussed using Dairy Comp 305 herd management software to the back changes in his 200-milldng cow operation. “I think Dairy Comp 305 is one of the best tools I have ever purchased. It allows me to quickly access and analyze my information,” Flowers said. The use of Milk Urea Nitrogen (MUN) Analysis, an analysis per formed on milk samples to mea sure the amount of protein cows ate using in the ration, was ad dressed by panelist Rick Hol dridge of Humdinger Holsteins in Bloomville. N.Y. “We are con stantly asking ourselves if we are profitable,” said Holdridge. “MUN analysis gives us a way to check on whether or not we are feeding too much. It costs us $6 for MUN testing and $3,000 a month for grain. So. for only $6. we can keep close track of a major expense.” Paul Sirois, DHI Forage Lab Manager, rounded out the panel by presenting information on the new In-Vitro procedure, which can fine tune the energy predic tions of feed. “In-Vitro methods attempt to simulate digestive pro cesses that naturally occur in the animal, in particular, the microbial breakdown of forages in the rumen,” reported Sirois. Currently, the DHI Forage Lab is one of only a few laboratories in the United States to offer In-Vitro analysis as a commercial service. Jamie Zimmerman, Assistant to the CEO, reviewed the progress made by Dairy One since its in ception in early 1997. In April, Dairy One purchased a calibration unit and began provid ing a bulk lank calibration service throughout the Northeast region. Additionally, expansion of the milk analysis laboratory occurred in early summer resulting in a state-of-the-art laboratory that performs all milk testing from tra ditional DHIA sample analysis to producer payment analysis, as well as calibration and control samples and bacteria analysis. Cumberland County Drill Team Entertains At Farm Show HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) - Carousel horses came to life as the members of Cumberland County Mounted Drill Team performed various formations including a carousal and wagon wheel in the large arena at Farm Show. Farm Show visitors watched as the 22 youngsters, ages 8 to 18, rode impressively. One cou ple watching commented in amazement as the riders moved their horses through a figure eight. "They’re really very good," commented the woman. The drill team members prac ticed weekly for nearly two months to prepare for Farm Show. They looked ready as they rode into the arena wearing matching green vests and carry ing flags. Being part of the drill team is about more than just work, says 4-H leader Sandy Long. At an evening banquet, past and present Directors of Northeast DHIA honored former General Manager Nelvin Empet, who re cently retired after 20 years of ser vice to the Cooperative. Northeast DHIA Records Ser vices currently provide service in the nine state region of Pennsylva nia, New Yak, New Jersey, Con necticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. member Levi Smith said, "It’s lots of fun." He enjoyed meeting people through the drill team. Mary Strasbough liked com ing to Farm Show and giving people the chance to see a horse and learn more about them. The wagon wheel was Lorie Wagner's favorite part of the drill team because she enjoyed working with others and the wagon wheel can only be done if everyone works together. Long hopes that the drill team shows people the joy that horses can bring and also helps to promote 4-H youth programs. The Cumberland County 4-H Mounted Drill Team was first organized in 1954 and there has been one ever since. Sandy and Mainard Long, the current lead ers, were both members. The drill team performs at Farm Show and at three summer events.
