ple worry about traveling to the
Farm Show during bad weather.
But that is nothing compared to the
way things used to be.
Roy and his wife Martha Jane
(Reist) remember attending the
event when the exhibits were
housed in various buildings around
town.
"The handicap of typical Farm
Show snow storms was not limited
to getting to Harrisburg and home
again, but from getting to one part
of the exhibition to another,” Bru
baker said.
Martha said that she remembers

showing a 4-H baby beef in the
1920 s before the complex was
built. The exhibitors slept in dor
mitories some distance away.
The Brubakers remember read
ing about the building that was to
be erected to house the annual
event “When we read about the
size and scope of this building
monster, it seemed bigger than any
1 had ever been in, and probably
was,” Brubaker said. “It was very
exciting to attend what was
thought to be the largest farm
exhibition under one roof in the
nation.”
That was before the large arena
was added some years later.

peter High School, Brubaker
remembers helping design an edu
cational window display for the
week.
After high school, Brubaker
went to work for his brother. L.H.
Brubaker, in the Allis-Chalmers
farm equipment business. Like
other manufacturers, Allis-
Chalmers set up a display and deal
ers and salesmen came to talk.
Business was brisk—-and tough.
“Farmers would visit all the major
equipment displays and ‘dicker’
for the best price before placing an
order for a tractor, combine, or
other equipment,” Brubaker said.

Roy and Martha Jana Brubaker have attended all but one
or two of the Pennsylvania Farm Shows held the past 70
years. They talk about the changes and plan to attend. “Like
the past 50 years, I’ll take the map for the Lancaster Farming
along to find my way around,” Brubaker said.
