    Twenty Years Baking Pies
For Farm Show Competitions

says, turning a pint jar filled with a
variety of vegetables. “This is a
good way to use up vegetables at
the end of the season.”
In addition to eating fresh, Vir
ginia stores potatoes and onions,
cans greenbeans, red beets, freez
es lima beans and broccoli, and
pickled cucumbers with dill. She
grows cabbage, swee com, and to
matoes. This year, she’s added
"Long Keeper” tomatoes. She also
make applesauce and bakes pies
from apples grown on the farm.
“I should grow garlic. I’ve got
ten organic gardening magazines,
but don’t always get to read
them,” Virginia says, adding that
her toother from Florida stops by
each summer to help with the po
tatoes. “1 always grow more than I
need, to give away. The girls come
in the summer to help.”
Virginia and Nelson’s daughter,
Carol Hobbs, lives in Virginia,
while daughter Barbara Vogt lives
in Alabama. Barbara paints and
papers a room for her mother
every summer. Both girls say their
mother does too much.
“I grow pumpkins, and gourds,

someone else decorates them,”
Virginia says. “My sister-in-law,
Ethel Smith, and Shirley Aurand,
help make some into birdhouses.
They’re good sellers at the bazaar.
We made egg-shaped gourds into
snowmen. With gourds, you never
know what you’re going to get”
Virginia also delivers church
bulletins to shut-ins. is secretary in
the Junior Department at Ellen
Chapel Church, and likes to knit
and sew. Although the energy
from her petite body seems end
less, she modestly says she has
slowed'down considerably.
“I’m not a big eater. It keeps me
busy filling everyone else up. I’m
just glad I have good health, and I
feel needed.”

Scald milk. Add sugar, salt, and
shortening and stir. Cool to luke
warm. Measure into bowl water
and sugar. Sprinkle with dry yeast
Add lukewarm milk mixture. Add
and stir in the beaten eggs. Add
and stir in 3 cups of flour. Beat un
til smooth. Add 3 additional cups
of flour. Knead, let rise and shape.
Let rise V* to one hour. Bake at
350 for 20 minutes, 10 minutes on
the top and 10 minutes on the bot
tom.
