Farming, Friday, January 9, 1999 CSCE Ends 1997 With Record- Breaking Volume Trading Year (NEW YORK, NY.) - Futures and options trading at the Coffee, Sugar & Cocoa Exchange, Inc. (CSCE) reached historic proportions in 1997 with 13,066,042 total contracts trad ed - the largest annual total vol ume since the founding of the Exchange in 1882. The record setting performance surpassed the previous all-time annual vol ume record of 12,664,052 total contracts traded in 1994. All the Commodities markets (coffee, sugar, cocoa and dairy products) demonstrated strength in the past year. Overall futures trading set an all-time annual mark of 10,022,427 contracts. Options hit an all-time annual record of 3,043,615 contracts traded for the year. The last futures record of 9,947,040 contracts traded was established in 1994. The trading of 1,272,767 coffee puts and calls in 1997 surpassed the 1994 record annual total of 1,208,925 coffee options. The new annual high of 399,408 cocoa options traded replaced the 1990 mark of 344,944 con tracts. Cocoa traders also set and quickly topped record all time open interest highs for both futures and options. The new options open interest mark of 64,900 contracts outstanding was established on November 6, 1997. Cocoa futures open inter est high occurred on October 14 when 114,240 contracts were outstanding. World sugar futures also experienced record activity as new open interest records were set in the last quarter of the year. On December 9, world sugar futures reached an open interest high of 210,419 con tracts outstanding.
