Maryland 4-H Youth Win Louisville Contest \ COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Team completed the season with a victory at the recent North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE). Following the Maryland State Contest in early September, the top 14 individu als in the senior division were invited to participate in a day and-a-half workout to compete for eight positions on two judg ing teams. The youth representing Maryland on the team at the NAILE were Mike Creek, Hagerstown, Md.; Jeena Rinehart, Taneytown, Md.; Barbara Schenning, Bel Air, World Record Milk Production Shattered By Wisconsin Holstein BRATTLEBORO, Vt. - A Wisconsin Holstein recently shattered the previous world record for milk production, pro ducing nearly 68,000 pounds of milk in one year. Muranda Oscar Lucinda, owned by Floyd and Lloyd Baumann, and Fred Lang, of Marathon, Wis., pro duced 67,914 pounds of milk in 365 days on twice-daily milk ings. Adams County Holstein Club Reorganizes GETTYSBURG (Adams Co.) The Adams County Hol tein Club held a reorganizational meeting recently at the Penn State Extension Office in Gettysburg. John Clowney of Lagging Stream Farm in Gettysburg was elected president of the board of directors, while the outgoing presi dent, Kevin Holtzinger of East Berlin, was elected vice president. Phil Van Lieu of East Berlin was elected secretary, and Dean Lobaugh of Aspers was re-elected treasurer. Marvin Brown of Littlestown was named to serve as the club’s representative on the board of the state Pennsylvania Holstein Association. Tom Piper, county agent emeri tus, was elected news reporter. Other directors on the 1998 board include Donald Rhodes Jr. of Gettysburg, Rose Wenger of Littlestown, Todd Gulich of Lit tlestown, Daniel Waybright of Gettysburg, and Cheryl Ulrich of New Oxford. In other business, the board approved a change in the term of office for its representative to the state board (state director). The board changed its policy by reducing the term of office of its state director from three years to one year; and by having the direc tor elected by membership at the club’s annual meeting, instead of having the board appoint a director during its reorganizations! meeting. In committee leadership appointments, Marvin Brown was named to head its Membership Committee; Dan Way bright to head its Special Activities Com mittee; Kevin Holtzinger, Sales Activities Committee; Todd Md.; and Amanda Valentine, Emmitsburg, Md. Anne Davis, Union Bridge, Md., assisted Dr. Lee Majeskie, Department of Animal Sciences, University of Maryland, in coaching the team. A total of 20 teams and 78 contestants participated in the competition. For individual placings, Jeena Rinehart placed Ist in Holsteins, 2nd in Ayrshires and Guernseys, 7th in Brown Swiss, and 14th in Jerseys. She placed sth in oral reasons and was high individual in the contest, winning by 11 points with a total of 620 points. Mike Creek placed first in Guernseys and Jerseys, and 16th in Ayrshires and Brown Swiss. Mike placed 2nd in oral reasons and was 2nd overall in This is the second world record producer owned by the Baumanns. In October 1996, their home-bred cow, Twin-B- Dairy Aerosta Lynn, produced 63,444 pounds of milk in 365 days on twice-daily milkings. With the completion of her 365-day record in November 1997, Lucinda’s record of 3-04 2x 67.914 M 2216 F 2248 P sur passed the record of Twin-B- Dairy Aerosta Lynn, Lucinda is Gulick, Breed Improvement Com mittee; Holtzinger, Rhodes and Wenger, Show Committee; Van Lieu and Ulrich, Annual Meeting Committee; Lobaugh, Clowney, Brown, Ulrich and Holtzinger, Budget Committee. Leadership for the club’s Junior Activities Committee is to be appointed at the next board meet ing. In the meantime. Van Lieu is to contact neighboring county clubs to leant how their youth programs are organized. Also, a chairman for the Cheese Sale Committee is to be named later. In other matters, membership renewal issues were discussed. It was decided that dues-delinquet members would be contacted prior to a membership meeting set to be held Dec. 29 at the Extension Office. As a result of discussions of pro jects and events the club supports, Gulich is to explore the potential for a co-sponsored calf sale; Way bright and Ulrich are to develop a proposal for an out-of-county tour; and Waybright is to make plans for a summer twilight meeting on a county dairy farm. Plans to co-sponsor a county dairy princess were tabled, pend ing the identification of qualified, interested candidates. In a discussion of youth awards, the board requested dial its Budget Committee come up with sugges tions for additional awards to be initiated in 1988. In other news, Clowney is to organize the club’s ice cream sale fund raiser for the carnival in Har ney, Maryland. Also, the board took under advisement a letter offering sug gestions for different club projects. the contest. Barbara Schenning placed sth in Jerseys and 9th in Holsteins. She ranked Bth both in oral reasons and overall in the contest. Amanda Valentine placed 10th in oral reasons in the contest and ranked 13 and 14th, respectively in Holsteins and Guernseys. For team results, Maryland ranked Ist in Guernseys, Jerseys, 2nd in Ayrshires and Holsteins, and 6th in Brown Swiss. The team talked their way to first place in oral reasons and ranked first overall in the contest, out-distancing the sec ond-place team from Wisconsin by 33 points. Minnesota ranked third followed by Ohio and Missouri. the fourth cow to produce more than 60,000 pounds of milk in 365 days. Previous record hold ers include, Raim Mark Jinx, with a 3x 365-day record of 60,440 pounds milk, and Bell-Jr Rosabel-ET, with a 3x 365-day record of 60,380 pounds milk. Lucinda (VG-86) was born July 1,1993. She is sired by Art- Acres Ned Boy Oscar-ET and out of High-Sights Cleitus Lulu, and 87-point Cleitus daughter. She is first on the National Leaders List for milk in the 2x 305-day junior three-year-old class, and first for protein and fifth for fat in the same class. The herd was verification tested three times during her lactation.
