A Christmas Tree for the Birds!
Here are a few suggestions to involve the family in decorating an outdoor tree for
the birds:
• Strung popcorn ropes (carpet thread)
• Strung fresh cranberries
• Thick fresh orange slices
• Dried apple rings
• Dried figs on a string
• Natural rough brown string, ribbon ar.i raffia for hai
decoration
• Pinecones packed with suet, nuts and raisins
• Pinecones packed with peanut butter mixed with coi
or seed
• Bird-shaped bird seed cookies (no salt)
• Peanuts in a shell under the tree
• Tiny fresh crab apples with stem
• Baby dried com bundles
• Large ears of dried colorful com with husks
• Whole walnuts for squirrels under the tree
• Rice cakes
• Red flame seedless grapes tied up in bunches
• Coconut shell pieces
• Tiny lengths of natural wool or string (for nesting in Spring)
• Tufts of quilt filler for decoration
A live growing tree should be used as you may attract squirrels and other critters
whose weight could upset an artificial one.

* 2 cups flour
* 1/2 tsp. baking powder
* 1/2 cup sugar
* 2/3 cup lard, butter or solid margarine
• 2 eggs
• 2/3 cup or more of Deluxe Blend
Method:
• Sift dry ingredients together
• Cut in shortening with pastry blender until crumbly
• Add eggs until dough firms
• Add Deluxe Blend Birdseed
• Kneed until smooth
• Chili overnight wrapped in wax paper and plastic bag
• Roll out on lightly floured surface to 1/4" thickness
• Cut out bird shapes
■ Press in macaroni piece towards top of each cookie for ease in hanging
• Brush Cook|es with slightly beaten egg whites
• Press more Deluxe Blend Birdseed over top .of each cookie
• Place on ungreased cookie sheet
• Bake at 325* for 12-15 minutes or until cookies harden
• 1 cup chunky peanut butter
• I cup suet
• 2-1/2 cups coarse yellow com meal to thicken
• Raisins and / or peanuts
• Pinecones and twine to hang
Method:
• Mix chunky peanut butter, suet and com meal together
• Pack mixture into pinecones
Wild Bind Seed Cookies
• Macaroni elbows or Ditali pasta pieces as hangers
• 2 egg whites for wash
• Bird-shaped cookie cutters
• Wool or twine to hang cookies
• NO SALT
