Horticultural Agei Tom Becker Forcing Bulbs for Winter Color Tulip, crocus, daffodil and grape hyacinth bulbs can be ‘forced* into bloom indoors dur ing the winter. This is the first of a two-part scries on how to force bulbs for winter enjoyment Start your spring show ‘early’ in the winter. ‘Forcing* bulbs indoors simulates outdoor fall and winter competitions. Bulbs easiest to force are hyacinth, paperwhite narcissus, and amaryllis. Tulips, daffodils, crocus. Iris reticulata, muscari (grape hyacinth), and scilla ate also easily forced with a few simple directions. Most bulbs should be potted in the fall for December and January bloom. Choose containers that drain well and arc approximately 1 The STREAM MAP U r PENNSYLVANIA was completed in 1965 after a thrtty-year effort by Howard Hlgbee, a former Penn State Professor. The map is also known as the LOST STREAM MAP to some anglers. Professor Higbee succeeded in creating a map of the highest • detail possibla...a map that shows every stream and lake. And stale agen cies were forced to keep their copies under lock and key. The experts had always told Professor Higbee that reprints were Impossible, because the maps were printed in non photographic blue. Then, in 1991, at the age of 91, Howard Higbee's draam came true. Computers made it possible to reprint the map. Holding an updated map, Howard said, 1 never thought I'd live to sec this Aam * twice as deep as the bulb. Light soil should be used, such as a mix ture of equal parts of garden or potting soil, peat, and sand. Plant tulips, hyacinths, and nar cissus, -with their tips exposed slightly at the soil line. Smaller bulbs, such as crocus, scilla, and muscari, should be covered by 1/2 inch of the soil mixture. Bulbs should be planted close together, but not crowded against each other or the side of the pot Tulips should be placd with their flat sides to the side of the pot, as the first large leaf grows from this side and thus makes an attractive pot. Water the plants and label them with the date and type of bulb.
