Pest End Youth Receives 4-H Award Derek Arnold, Brodhcadsville, a 4-H member of the Collection Connection 4-H Club, has been seleted as the recipient of the Robert A. Jensen Citizenship Award, a 4-H award given annual ly in recognition of Robert A. Jensen, a Vietnam Veteran of Monroe County who died in 1968 while serving his country. Derek has been an active 4-H member of Monroe County for seven years. Derek’s project work in entomology has helped him become involved in programs in the county and even on the state level. The 4-H Ambassadors were then introduced: Tami Cobb, Ben jamin Hibbard, Jcnni Marcho, Cody Peranich, and Tammy Val ashinas. The ambassadors brought the crowd to their feet with songs and a tic-tac-toe mixer, and pro ceeded to acknowledge the many sponsors of the county 4-H prog ram. Northeastern Farm Credit was awarded the 1997 Outstand ing Community Support Certifi cate. Charlotte Zebley and Donna Brown accepted the award. 4-H members from across the county were recognized for out standing achievement in many program areas. The first member awards were presented to Teen Leaders, Julie Stalter, Tammy Valashinas, Curtis KeiU, Charles Keihl, Joellyn Himka and Kerri Pratt. Teen leaders are a vital part of the 4-H program. There ate many teens who accept leadership roles within their clubs or the county program. Three News Reporters were awarded certificates for their out standing work in 1997. Abigail Onyon reported for the North Jackson Ag Club, Lindsay Place repotted for the Hoofs in Clover Horse and Pony Club and the DES Dairy Club, and Kevin Nesta reported for the Paws *n’ Tails Dog Club and the Dimock Com munity Club. Four members were acknow ledged for their 4-H Project Diver sity. There ate literally hundreds of 4-H projects available to 4-H members in Susquehanna County. To complete the 4-H year, each member must meet the require ments of at least one project. Eli zabeth Seman and Sarah Holmes of the Sunrise and Sunset 4-H Club each completed eight pro jects, and Danica Newman of the South Montrose Busy Bees also completed eight projects. Five 4-H members received scholarships at the Achievement Night Program: Kevin Harvatine received two scholarships, one from the Livestock Scholarship Fund, and the other from the Development Fund. Andrea Gar ner also received two scholar ships, one from Northeastern Farm Credit and the other from the Development Fund. David Harva tine was awarded a development Fund Scholarship, and Melissa Kanna and Cory Pcranich each received scholarships from the Horse and Pony Scholarship Fund. Member awards were com pleted with the announement of the 1997 Susquehanna County Outstanding 4-H’crs: Andrea Gar ner and Kevin Harvatine. Andrea and Kevin have been 4-H mem bers for the past 10 years and have capitalized on the opportunities that 4-H has offered them. Pach was awarded an engraved silver tray.
