Impressive January Calf Turns Into KILE Grand Angus Female

—This year’s January calves have
looked like a championship class
for the Keystone International
Livestock Expo (KILE) grand
champion Angus female exhibitor.
Larry Weaver of New Holland
exhibited one of those babies,
Weaverland Scaara Sundance,
bom Jan. 12 this year from a CH
054 Rito 0100 sire to a Krueger
Scaara Leeza dam. The junior heif
er calf champion captured grand
champion female at the KILE
Angus Show late last week.
The calves from Rito “are the
best we’ve ever had,” said Weaver.
Weaver, who breeds AI, pur
chased the Rito semen from
American Angus Semen Service.

Larry said that his wife Barbara
does all the breeding, and has stud
ied to improve the Weaverland
Valley Farm’s 40-cow herd’s
genetics.
The bull genetics, Weaver
noted, were recommended by
Cheryl Fairbaim, Chester County
livestock agent. They used the Rito
bull last year and “liked her,”
Weaver said, “so we used him
heavily this year.”
So far, four or five calves have
been obtained from the Rito bull.
But the one that won at KILE, so
far, is the “best of the bunch,”
Weaver said.
The purebred Angus breeder
also sells feeder calf, maintaining a
herd of 150 head of Angus crosses
in New Holland. Weaver said that
if he couldn’t sell Scaara Sundance

privately, he would save her for
competition at the state Farm
Show.
Also under consideration is the
North American International
Livestock Exposition in Louisvil
le, Ky. show in mid-November, if
“we think she’s powerful enough”
for the tough national competition,
Weaver indicated.
So far, Weaver’s show animals
have placed in several top spots at
the Atlantic National Angus
Breeders Show recently. In addi
tion, Larry and wife Barbara
picked up premier exhibitor and
premier breeder of the KILE
Angus show.
Show judge Charlie Boyd, May
slick, Ky., commented on the
cattle at the show. “These are very
functional cattle cattle you can
make a living with,” that were
“structurally sound, not overcon
ditioned, and have flesh and ability
to calve out” nicely. Boyd, of Boyd
Beef Cattle, breeds Angus and
Polled Hereford cattle.

In the bull competition, Boyd
said the lineup contained "sound,
functional, bulls that can get out
and move and travel.” He picked
the senior yearling bull, JDH Key
stone Ext (S: N. Bar Emulation
Ext, D: Mengs Miss Skymere)
shown by JDH Cattle Company,
Dover, as grand champion bull.
The bull is owned by three exhibi
tors; JDH Cattle; EdgebrookFarm,
Charlottesville, Va.; and Blue
Ridge Farms, Afton, Va.
