Committee Votes
For Ethanol
WASHINGTON, D.C.
The National Com Growers
Association (NCGA) enthusi
astically endorsed this morn
ing’s vote by the Senate Fin
ance Committee to extend the
federal ethanol program
through the year 2007.
The committee’s provision,
which would continue the par
tial excise tax exemption for
gasoline marketers who blend
their product with ethanol, now
moves to the senate floor as
part of a comprehensive, six
year highway bill that must still
be reconciled with the stalled
House version.
Speaking from his farm near
Grand Pass, Mo., NCGA Presi
dent Ryland Utlaut said of the
vote to extend ethanol: “This
puts America one step closer to
energy independence, one step
closer to clean air, and one step
closer to a healthier rural eco

for their continued support of
ethanol despite the fierce op
position from Big Oil’s friends
in Congress. “These senators
recognize that the federal etha

program that works. It creates
jobs, reduces the budget deficit
and trade deficit, helps Ameri
can farmers, and cleans our
polluted air,” he said.
Utlaut also praised the thou
sands of farmers including
many of NCGA’s 30,000-plus
members nationwide who
have taken the time to contact
House and Senate members
and explain ethanol’s import
ance to the economy and the
environment
“We have a ways to go be-'

we are going to continue our
calls, letters, faxes, e-mails and
meetings with members of
Congress until we finally get
the job done'.”
