V3£tanrastef September 1997 Hughes, Reifsnyder Hog Trophies At LOU ANN GOOD Lancaster Fanning Staff LAMPETER (Lancaster Co.) Andy Hughes showed the champion 4-H hog and Jason Reifsnyder the champion FFA hog at the West Lampeter Community Fair on Wednesday. The hog show divided into two categories was composed of 29 4-H entries and 65 FFA entries. Judge Dave Holloway, a Doroc breeder from Glen Rock, said that at a hog show a lot of things got to be looked at in order to please the packer, the industry, and the consumer. “A hog’s got to be heavy enough to please the packers, lean enough to please the industry, but not too lean or people won’t like the taste,” he said. In a search for the perfect hog, Holloway said that “It’s amazing the things you find out when you drive them.” Comparing different breeds is sometimes difficult, but Holloway was immensely impressed with the hogs shown. “It’s exciting to get down to quality like this,” he said when selecting the champion from over all the champion classes. It was the first time Jason Reifs nyder showed the champion hog at Lampeter. “Lucky,” he answered, when asked for the secret in showing the champion hog in lightweight, mediumweight, and heavyweight division before clinching the FFA champion hog title. Jason, a 1996 Penn Manor gra duate, showed hogs from his employer Charles Grain. Jason, son of Katherine and David Reifs nyder also attends Harrisburg Area TIMONIUM, Md.
