$9,375 to take home seven head of
good Holstein stock from the
event
The sale of three embryos in
one lot at $4OO each brought
$1,200 for Hillmont Farms and
Ron Kling, Berlin.
A baby calf barely 12 hours old
went for $3OO, Yoder said.
After she tallied the averages,
Yoder said the 23 milking cows
averaged $1,568.45. Bred heifers
.averaged $1,257.81 for 16 head.
Calves under six months aver
aged $808.03 and those between
six and thirteen months, or breed
ing age, averaged $908.33, she
said.
Jill Fox, the wife of John Fox
who co-chaired the event with
Scott Foreman, said she was nom
inated to organize the decorations
and spruce up the sale bam with
mums, bows and a few frills.
Jill’s mother, Sally Love,
Somerset, agreed to handcraft a
beautiful wreath which two area
veterinarians bid to the hundred
dollar mark, before the one from
Grantsville, Md. got it.
“We ought to get a Holstein
cow involved in this wreath,” Jill
told her mother beforehand.
With a bit of ingenuity, they did
indeed bind the miniature bovine
to the array of silk flowers and
leaves attached to a grapevine.
Auctioneer Clark Yoder teamed
up with Oren Bender on pedigrees
to conduct the sale.
Larry Lohr and Rick Foreman
kept things under control in the
ring itself.
Chicken barbecue dinners, hot
dogs, pie, and other goodies were
sold by the Somerset County Jun
ior Holstein Club to raise their fin
ancial balances.
