QUARRYVILLE (Lancaster
Co.) —Justin Winter believes that
steers should work for their
champion ribbon.
Literally.
His secret place the water at the
bottom of the hill. When the steer
wants to eat, make him walk 100
yards uphill to get to the feed.
It was that kind of “work for it,
earn it” strategy that netted the
supreme steer trophy on Thursday
evening at the Solanco Fair.
Justin, 14, son of Debbie and
Richard Wimer, Quarryville,
walked his Angus/Chianina
crossbred steer, Buddy, to supreme
champion. Show judge Greg Krue
ger, Angus breeder from Coates
ville, said he believes the steer
would hand up a' really good
carcass.
Justin obtained the steer, mid
dleweight champion of the show,
from a Weaver and Maclntyre
Club Calf Sale in Lititz. The Sol
anco High School 9lh grader spent
about two hours of work before the
show, washing and clipping the
steer.
The steer learned to exercise
himself—simply by walking 100
iteer at Solanco Thursday evening. Jessica
yards up a steep grass/rock slope
from the water trough to the
feed. Another ingredient to
championship success for Justin
has been feeding a combination
calf grower and cracked com.
This is Justin’s one and only
show for the year, though he hopes
to attend state Farm Show some
day. He is a member of Solanco
FFA.
Reserve champion was captured
by Jessica Schmidt for her
purebred Angus steer. Jessica, 15,
is the daughter of Laurie and Pete
Schmidt, Drumore.
Laurie said the steer was bred in
the fair hometown at Twin Oak
Farms. Last year, Laurie said Jessi
ca also won reserve champion at
Solanco with another purebred
from Quarryville.
The steer Jessica showed this
year. Twin Oaks Power Buzz
(“Buzz,” named after the popular
character in the film ‘Toy Story”),
was shown at the Penn State Beef
Expo in March.
Jessica walks with the steer
“constantly,” said Laurie. Jessica’s
steer was the reserve champion of
the middleweight division. Jessica
is assistant secretary in the Red
Rose 4-H Beef Club and is secret-
ary of the 4-H Woolics Club.
Jessica will be showing at the
Keystone International Livestock
Expo (KILE), Manheim Fair, and
state Farm Show.
Also, for the first time, Solanco
Fair began a fitting contest, of
which Jessica won senior
champion.
There were a total of eight exhi
bitors and the same number of
steers. Following is a list of show
placings.
